Skyline K-8

Principal's Message
Skyline K-8 Community,
Thank you for making Skyline’s 47th annual Cornfest such a huge success. Another huge thank you to Rockstar Committee Chair Kitty Nolan and all of our volunteers for putting on this amazing event.
We will be having our Back to School Night - Curriculum / TAG Info. Night on September 25th from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. We will meet in the gym at 6:00 p.m. Where I will welcome families, introduce staff and the PBIS Team will go over new procedures. At 6:30 p.m. families will be dismissed to visit classrooms until 8:00 p.m. We look forward to seeing you all there.
We practiced our first fire drill and it went very well. Next week we will be practicing a lockdown drill. Lockdown drills are to practice what to do when there is a threat inside of the building. We teach the students LOCKDOWN! LOCKS, LIGHTS, OUT OF SIGHT! Students move, stay out of sight and maintain silence. Teachers move to the classroom, lock doors, cover windows and make sure lights are out. They also maintain silence, take attendance and wait for First Responders.
I have started a Twitter account and am trying to post a few times a week. If you would like to follow me you can find me at @BGAGUIRRE1. I am very new to Twitter and tweeting. J
Have a great weekend!
Principal Aguirre

Counselor's Corner
The beginning of the year has been so positive at Skyline. However, returning to school can present adjustment challenges for some students. From the American Academy of Pediatrics, mental health warning signs include excessive sleeping, loss of self-esteem, a decrease of interest in favorite activities, sudden decrease in academic performance, loss of appetite, and changes in personality (i.e. aggressiveness, withdrawal). Concerned parents can keep open lines of communication, help students get treatment, and stay attuned to their child’s behavior. More information can be found at healthychildren.org and families are encouraged to contact me with any mental health concerns or for assistance in connecting to resources. Immediate and local crisis help is available 24/7 through the Multnomah County Mental Health crisis hotline 503-988-4888.
Have a wonderful week,
Amy Gervais

IB Corner
You may have heard conversations from students about the new morning bus arrival setup. As the staff models the elements of IB learning for the students through reflection, we saw some areas that needed improvement. Here is our new set up.
Students are able to get off the bus at 8:30 where they will enter through the side door into the gym. Students are then asked to line up according to their grade level and that is where they will wait for the bell to ring to be dismissed to their classes. We made this change to have a better flow of students in the morning and hopefully create less gathering and stampeding in the hallways.
Please remember that students are not allowed in the building unless supervised by an adult prior to 8:30

TAG Information
Welcome to a new year here at Skyline! As the school’s TAG facilitator I wanted to take this opportunity to share some upcoming dates and information regarding the TAG program and all upcoming dates. As continued from years prior, students in grades 4 - 8 will be nominated based off of their SBAC scores from the year prior. Students who qualified based on their 2017 -18 SBAC scores will be notified in September and a nomination form will be sent home to be filled out and signed. This form needs to be filled out completely and signed by a parent or guardian in order to complete the qualification process. All forms will be due to me by November 30. I will not be able to accept any completed forms after the November 30th date.
If your child is in grade K-3 or you would like to have your child take the Intellectual test, nomination forms are located on the TAG board in the main hallway. All nomination forms need to be filled out completely by both the parent and the teacher, signed and turned into me by November 30. I will not be able to accept any completed forms after the November 30th date. Only students in grades K-3 can take the reading and math portions of the TAG test. All other grade levels will use the SBAC scores. TAG testing will take place between January and February of 2019. I will update on the exact date as the district assigns a proctor to our school for the test.
All second-grade students participate in the Intellectual TAG test (CogAT7). The second-grade teachers will administer this test in the classroom. The Intellectual TAG test will happen between October 1st and October 19th. Second-grade teachers will notify their students prior with a letter from the TAG department being sent home. The official TAG testing will not begin until January 2019.
Please contact me if you have any questions. I am happy to answer any questions you have. I will also be holding a TAG information meeting on Back to School Night on September 25.

A HUGE thank you to Kitty Nolen for organizing Cornfest this year!!! And many, many thanks to all those who arrived to trim and roast corn, help set up, prepare and serve food, sell soda, supervise games, clean up AND MORE.
