The Dolphin Whistle

March 14, 2018, Issue 27

Big picture

Dear Mariano Castro Parents,
This week and next, all Castro students are participating in Ability Awareness Week(AAW). Huge thanks go to the SELPA 1 CAC and the Learning Challenge Committee of the LA/MV PTAs as well as the coordinators for this wonderful experience for Castro and Mistral, parents Agnes Charrel-Berthillier and Claire Quesnel-Oueini.

Students in grades 1, 4, and 5 participate in a rotation of activities that are designed to build empathy, understanding and respect for the challenges of all students. Students in grades K, 2, and 3 have a volunteer presenter come to the room and read a grade-level appropriate book and leading a discussion highlighting the challenges faced by students with physical, emotional, or learning difficulties. The emphasis is on understanding, kindness, and dignity.

It is our goal that every MVWSD student understand that:

  • Every student is special in one way or another,
  • There is a common need for friendship, support, guidance,

  • Every student needs to be included and accepted.

This will be an annual event at Castro and we are confident that experiences such as this will help students to grow into caring and understanding adults as well as help all students to contribute to a positive learning environment.

Please attend the Speaker Presentation on this topic at our PTA meeting Wed, March 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the multi.

Best Regards,

Theresa Lambert

Principal Mariano Castro Elementary

The MVEF Winter Gala

The MVEF Winter Gala was a magical night, filled with food, fun, and philanthropy, as parents, teachers, District staff, city council and school board members, and corporate sponsors came together to support every child at every school in MVWSD. As we "Let the Music Play, MVEF raised over $70,000, including a special fundraiser during dinner that raised $15,000 specifically to repair and purchase instruments for our 5th graders and middle schoolers. MVEF thanks its guests, donors, sponsors, volunteers, and staff who made this night successful. You may have noticed a new checkmark on your school's MVEF sign as it hit the $600,000 marker. MVEF still needs to raise over $150,000 to meet its financial commitment to the district. Help continue to bring Community School of Music and Arts music and art lessons, hands-on science, Living Classroom, and middle school athletics and extended day electives to our children by donating to
