A Message from the Principal

Dear Morse Street Families,

We have so much to celebrate as we reflect on our first trimester of learning. All of our classrooms are buzzing with pride. Our pre-K learners are hard at work learning their ‘speedy sounds’. Each week they are introduced to new sounds and then they work on play activities to solidify the learning and application of these sounds. Play is a large part of our pre-K curriculum and our students are learning how to play deeply and for longer as they build their attention and collaborative skills.

Our kindergarten learners are excited to share that they are ‘Super Readers’ who can use their reading powers. They have been learning about characters in their read aloud books and paying attention to what characters say and do. This way they can learn/think more deeply while they are reading or listening to a story.

Our first graders are learning about mindsets for learning - you might hear them talking (or singing) about being persistent, flexible, optimistic and having empathy. These are all skills and mindsets that are needed to be successful at school and in life. Students have been putting these skills to use, as they have been studying different countries. This unit combines learning in their non-fiction reading and writing units with Social Studies. Each class studied a different country and this week all first graders are ‘traveling’ around the world to learn about different countries and cultures.

In second grade Flat Stanley is preparing to make an appearance. Very soon students will send their Flat Stanley to friends and family near and far, in the hopes that they will send him back with information about his adventures on his visit to stay with them. Our second graders gain insights into different people and places around the world, as well as using their geography skills to locate places on the map.

As we enter into the break, on behalf of the Morse Street team I wish to extend our gratitude to you for partnering with us and sharing your wonderful children with us each day.

Warmly,

Julie Nickerson

Celebrations

CELEBRATIONS:

Staff members at Morse Street School recognize the importance of birthdays and other celebrations. In an effort to respect the diverse population at the Morse Street School, students will not be allowed to bring food to Morse Street School for birthday celebrations. Classrooms will recognize/celebrate birthdays in a way determined by each teacher and class. Some examples of these celebrations may include songs, crowns, cheers, favorite books, games/ activities, etc.

The staff has decided that teachers will hand out birthday invitations only if the entire class is invited to the celebration. Also, teachers will not deliver invitations to other classrooms at any time. This decision was made after lengthy conversations and consideration of many factors including the feelings of students who may not be invited to a party. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
