Great Schools need Great Teachers!
Great Schools need Great Teachers is the mantra for Virginia Beach City Public Schools this year. JBD has some great teachers, that's for sure. In the last few weeks, I have observed so many wonderful and enriching learning experiences going on in the classrooms. Kindergarteners have truly found the art of writing and are writing up a storm! It's amazing to see the progress and it's even more amazing how much more they like to write with the Elf on the Shelf watching their every move! Since September their growth is phenomenal. First grade has been creating their own writing goals, programming Dash, the Robot, creating....and...... Second grade just concluded a fabulous unit on Native Americans. Grade 3 is jumping hard on the technology train as they use the SeeSaw APP to assist with their work and switch among their class for quality math rotations. If you look carefully, you might see some butterflies camouflaged in their rooms as that is one component they are working on in the Structures in Nature unit. Grade 4 has taken their critical thinking to the next level with their rich discussions with literature and writing. In addition, kids are actually excited about learning LONG DIVISION! Staying on the subject of math, 5th grade math whizzes participated in an authentic restaurant experience where they ordered off the menu, totaled their bills, along with calculating tax and tip! (Maybe now they will appreciate the cost when the family goes to dinner-parents, keep the learning going and ask them to figure the tax and tip out before they get dessert-how that for an idea?)!
Very exciting stuff going on around JBD. The fourth grade chorus is performing at Westminster Canterbury as well as for parents this month. The SCA has been busy with all of the proceeds from the Month Of Giving and has now planned the fabulous spirit days listed below along with the Snowman TOY drive. We are so privileged to be able to help others in need.
