ANCIENT GREECE
THEATRE
When Did It Begin?
The Greek theatre history began with festivals honouring the Gods. Theatre comes for the word “theatron” meaning "seeing place" while drama comes form the word “dran” meaning "to do". The first plays were around the 5th Century which would of made the concepts for the plays completely different to today’s theatre.
Masks
The masks were made of linen or cork, so none have survived. They displayed the emotion, gender and status of a person. Masks were also used to show a physical change in a certain character. Mask also usually had a megaphone shaped mouth to project to all the parts of the theatre.
Actors
All actors were either men or boys. No women or girls were allowed to perform in Greek theatre. There were usually one to three actors in each play.
Categories
Tragedy and comedy were the two main categories of Greek theatre. Of course their opinions on what a tragedy and comedy play is would be completely different to ours today, and that is right.
