Olga B. and her dog -helping students to read!
Oga says, "We did four library visits to Hoffman this past school year. The first and last visit were ESL classes. The second visit was with our 7th grade study hall (students who failed STAAR). The third visit was with GT ELA students.
We are looking at continuing next school year with the study hall class. We started late in the school year last year and want to start right away this school year."

Tammy Zamaripa's 3D Club
The first week, students learned about Tinkercad and how to create objects. The second week was for designing their own unique object that would be printed. At the conclusion of the club, Mr. Brown, began printing the student’s work. He utilized both the Makerbot (found in all NISD libraries) and the Dremel (Reserved from Library Services) in order to print everyone’s project. What I liked about this club was the quickness of it. The club itself lasted only two weeks and everything was printed by the following week (3 weeks total).
We decided to schedule this club the last three weeks of the school, since all STAAR administrations were over at that point. The club received a lot of positive attention, as the projects were being printed, from students and staff passing through the library. I was still running stations the last two weeks of school and trying to close up the library, so my involvement was minimal. My part mainly consisted of reserving the Dremel and making sure the printers were printing.
If you have someone on your campus that is knowledgeable and familiar with 3-D printers this may be a good club to add to your campus. Of course, if that person is you then this would also be a good club because of its short duration. This club could be extended to more grade levels depending on the availability of the 3-D printers and the availability of the club coordinator(s)! -Tammy Z.
Lunch and Learn in your library?!
Camila Castro did this very thing with much success at Neff MS. Lunch and Learn is another option to invite students to enjoy the library and learning.

2. Bag It- I placed items that have a connection in a bag. I have five bags for them to choose from. For example, one brown bag has a thermometer, an empty box of cold medicine, tissues, a small medicine cup, and an empty bag of cough drops. Another has a hairbrush, a comb, a barrette, a ponytail holder, and a small empty bottle of shampoo.
The students select one bag and remove all of the items. They have to decide how all of the items in the bag are connected and write a paragraph with the main idea and supporting details.
3. Comic Strip Biography- I placed Easy Biographies on the table. Students chose one to read. After reading the book, they focused on the main events in the person's life, and turned it into a comic strip. I used comic strip templates I found online.
4. Caption It- I cut out interesting/ unusual pictures from old magazines. I placed them on a table with paper and glue sticks. Students chose one picture and glued it to a piece of paper. Then they had to write a title for the picture and come up with a caption that made sense.
5. Flocabulary- Students worked individually or with a partner. They logged in and went to the Fiction/Non-Fiction video. After watching the video, they went to Create on the left hand side. There they worked on creating a poem/ rap about fiction/non-fiction using the words in the work bank.
