News from Fantastic 1st Graders!
Mrs. Leidig's Learners - a Weekly Newsletter
A few of the skills we'll be learning this week:
MTSS (Reading Switches): This week, my group will be continuing our learning about contractions.
Handwriting: "How-to" writing. This writing will be sent home with students. Right now, we are coming up with our steps together, and they are copying mine from the projector until we get the hang of it. Since we do them together, sometimes I'll grade these and sometimes they'll just be sent home as is.
Daily 5/Guided Reading: We are continuing to work on fluency in both Daily 5 and in the small groups I teach during this time.
Phonics: Sight words - continue to "chip away" at those words! Nightly books - Thank-you for reading each night! Phonics - the focus this week is on words containing "s blends" like "spell, and snake".
Math: We will continue exploring our daily math journals, and I will also be doing some testing for the "Doubles Club". As a reminder, students have flashcards in their folder to practice. They must master the addition of 0+0 all the way to 10+10. Thank you for helping your child practice. They love the "doubles rap" on youtube, too! :)
We are also learning more about subtraction this week. I have noticed more of a difficulty with subtraction than addition so far. Hopefully "practice makes perfect!" :) Depending on how subtraction goes this week, we may also touch a bit on fact families.
Science/Social Studies: This week, our focus will be on Veterans Day. We will even have a chance to attend a Veterans Day program on Tuesday. Thank-you, armed forces, for our freedom!
Odds and Ends
Book orders: Our classroom was able to order 10 free books because of your orders this last time - thank you! Book orders came home on Friday for Thanksgiving time, and will be due by November 21st.
Brrrr!: As it gets cooler outside, please be sure and send appropriate outdoor clothing - especially coats/jackets, as we always try to have recess outside if possible.
Food Drive: If you would like to participate in the canned food drive to earn that 1/2 day of school "off", go ahead and start sending things in! (November 3-21). The boxes are on the stage for collecting.
November 26-28: NO SCHOOL - Thanksgiving Break
A Reason to Celebrate!
Lexia: The whole class worked so well this week - scores are looking good! On a random note, more and more students have begun complaining that their ear buds have quit working on 1 or both sides, etc. Please don't feel the need to go out and buy more, but if you have extras lying around at home, many of the kids are needing an additional pair - as your child to be sure because I've lost track of who they all are. Thanks!
Our business buddy: Every month, we are going to try to hang up art in "The Shepherd's Mill" - Sometime this week, there will be a new project. Check it out and support our business buddy, as well!
HAVE A GREAT WEEK - I hope all enjoyed the beautiful weekend weather!!
