PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE by Kayla Bell
Dear Nancy Ryles Families,
5 days. We did it!! It was so nice to see the sunshine and to be back to school this week. I could see routines being reestablished and students were picking up right where they left off. I witnessed lots of learning in the building this week. Today I had the opportunity to attend the second grade museum. Second graders were sharing all they knew about dinosaurs, weather, snakes, spiders and more. It was a great celebration of their research projects.
Thank you for attending the NRCO’s Bingo Night on Thursday. We had an amazing turn out. It was great to see so many families playing together. We hope you can attend the next NRCO sponsored event scheduled for February 9. This will be our Family Dance. More details are in the "NRCO News" section. As I have said many times before, we have a very supportive parent community. We want to thank all of the families who contributed to our delicious breakfast last week. Our bus drivers were also appreciative. They remarked at how supported they feel by our community. So thank you for realizing the value they add to Nancy Ryles.
This week, Beaverton School District announced some changes in the school calendar to make up for our snow days. The first day that impacts our calendar is next Friday, February 3. Students will be in attendance that day. Another change, spring conferences will be canceled this year. This means that we will not be holding individual conferences for all of our families. If you wish to check in with your child’s teacher to discuss your child’s progress, please contact them directly.
I will be sending out an updated calendar with the ‘specials’ information on it very soon. It is almost ready to go, we just have a few other dates that need to be changed.
Enjoy the weekend.
SNOW DAY RESTORATOIN AND IMPACT
The District recently announced the restoration of 6 school days lost due to inclement weather. In collaboration with our teachers’ association, we will be making the following adjustments to the District calendar, restoring six (6) instructional days for students and extending the first semester by one week, effective immediately. These include a staff development day, two (2) days of conferences, a grading day, a work day, and an additional day in June.
Days to be Restored for Students
Elementary
February 3
March 10
April 28
June 22
Conferences (2 days) (March 2-3 for Nancy Ryles)
It is important to note that eliminating critical time for teachers to participate in professional development, meet with students and parents and assess student progress has been a painful decision, as it also impacts the quality of instruction for our students and communication with parents. Report cards will be sent home later than normal as teachers will need an additional week to complete them before they are mailed by the District. Teachers will not provide conference times at the elementary and middle school levels. High school students will have full days during finals’ weeks, as these days will be student contact days for the remainder of the school year.
