March 2023

From the Director of Child Nutrition Services
We celebrate National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) beginning on March 6th. CNS recognizes the value a nutritious school breakfast provides in fueling students for success. This special observance celebrates the many ways we give kids a great start every day #NSBW23 “Dig Into School Breakfast.” In partnership with the principal teams, we proudly serve Breakfast Break district-wide at first elementary school recess and between first and second passing periods at all secondary campuses. This is our second year of providing an equity-minded service that ensures all students have access to the first meal of the day.
We hope you feel a sense of belonging within our community as we look to nourish our future. Throughout the district, the expanded access to water filling stations allow our scholars, staff, and faculty to enjoy nature’s best beverage with a healthy dose of self-care. I am humbled by the dedication of our entire team. From the early morning 1:00 A.M. start with our drive team, to the amazing site, central kitchen crews, and leadership that provide the best customer engagement daily at breakfast, lunch, special events, after school meals and weekend services. At home, consider celebrating nutrition with a meal abundant with seasonal fruits and vegetables to connect with family and friends at the dinner table. Alone we are one water drop, yet together we are a powerful ocean of wellness. Let's go surfing!
(Our annual California School Nutrition Association (CSNA) October conference in Pasadena. We had historic attendance with over 30 Redlands CNS professionals in attendance.)
What's Happening in Redlands USD
Celebrating Read Across America
Students, families, staff, and community members joined the District in celebrating Reading Across America earlier this month! The week was filled with Favorite Book Character Dress Up Days to Scholastic Book Fairs to even high school students and special community guests reading their favorite books to the elementary school students. Thank you to everyone who participated and made it extra special for our students this year!
High Schools Participated in Civics Day
Citrus Valley, Orangewood, Redlands, and Redlands East Valley High School student leaders spent their morning shadowing the RUSD Board of Education members and Cabinet team learning about the District. Once Superintendent Mauricio Arellano had each of the students introduce themselves, he shared the role the District plays and goals and objectives of the RUSD 2025 vision.
Students were then divided into their roles--either members of the Governing Board or Cabinet members--and worked on current issues in education. Each school participated in a mock board meeting discussing these issues. Following this activity, students toured the Child Nutrition Services (CNS) Central kitchen and then headed over to lunch, which was provided by the Optimist Club.
Pete Aguilar Visit
33rd Congressional District of California Representative Pete Aguilar had the opportunity to speak to our Moore Middle School 8th graders about government. He shared his experience in his position, and discussed the three branches of government and the steps of making a bill into law. At the conclusion of his presentation, students asked Congressman Aguilar questions, including topics of his experience as former Mayor of Redlands, the process of passing laws, and campaigning for each of his terms.
Thank you to Representative Pete Aguilar for sharing your passion with our students!
Animakerspace/Advanced Manufacturing Collaboration
Clement Middle School's unique collaboration between the Garner Holt Animakerspace and the Advanced Manufacturing classes allows students to incorporate various skill sets and to collaborate with one another in completing special projects. Hear more about this special partnership from the teachers and students currently learning in these classes.
RCSS Attends National School Counselor Leadership Conference
The Redlands Coordinated Supports and Services (RCSS) team presented at the National School Counseling Leadership Conference. The conference focuses on addressing "a critical gap in professional learning for administrators who oversee school counseling programs at the school, district, county, and state levels," according to Hatching Results, the department's partner and host of the conference.
Presenters -- Director of Behavior and Mental Health Director Rachel Malatesta, Program Specialist John Juniper, and Program Specialist Michelle DePuy -- shared the implementation journey of comprehensive school counseling in Redlands. It was a great opportunity to review the transformative work done by the school counselors, counseling leadership team, and district program specialists.
"Our session focussed on how our district used the school closures of 2020-21 as an opportunity to connect site-level efforts including counseling, PBIS, SEL, Mental Health and Student Leadership into a coordinated, district-supported system meeting the needs of all students," shared Juniper.
The three high school counseling department leads and APs over counseling joined the District team to represent RUSD at this national gathering of school counseling leaders.
A Day in the Life of a SRO!
As part of the RUSD 2025 and Actions Create Trust (ACT) Now Campaign, our District partners with the Redlands Police Department and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department in providing School Resource Officers (SROs) to to provide positive relationships between police officers, students, staff and parents and to improve the perception safety at the high schools. Certificated and Classified Spotlights!
Certificated Staff Spotlight: Ms. Karen Burk
Meet Victoria Elementary School Innovation Teacher Ms. Karen Burk! Ms. Burk has been teaching in district since 2018, but her impact in her school, specifically teaching the Garner Holt Animakerspace Lab, is impactful for all TK-5th grade students!
She works with teachers to bring STEAM activities to enrich their students learning, including teaching them how to use robotic kits, create electrical unities, and graphic design.
"The opportunities the students are getting in the Garner Holt Animakerspace are very valuable," she shared. "They are learning career pathways at an early age that expands their vision of what they can become in their future."
Her days are filled with introducing students to different career skills, use various machines and software, and teaching them to create a project from start to finish. One of her favorite projects is working with students to create an animatronics showing using Spark-E.
"They learn how to sculpt faces for their character, create costumes, design backgrounds and props," she shared. "Students learn how to voice act, operate the animatronic and add dramatic lighting to their shows."
Her journey teaching STEAM and innovation is rewarding work. "The school board and Superintendent's support is very important in this type of educational setting," she shared.
Classified Staff Spotlight: Safety Officer II Victor Marquez
Students and staff see him moving about throughout the campus ensuring that student safety is his number one priority. But he always make sure that students know that he's available to help them in any capacity.
"As a Safety Officer, there is never a typical day," he shared. "Every single day presents new challenges, and I am constantly learning new things, such as the ever-evolving slang words and social media trends."
One of his favorite moments in his role was when Citrus Valley High School joined the Citrus Belt League (CBL), where their football team won the game at the very last minute.
"To be part of our players excitement and hear the roar of the crowd was priceless," he shared.

School Communications
Parent Communication: What to Expect
Staying informed is key to a smooth school year (for everyone!). Outlined below are ways the district as well as school sites will communicate with you.
District Communication
The district will send monthly newsletters, letters from the Superintendent, and updates through ParentSquare containing important information and various action items. By reading through the communication, you are helping your student(s) stay on top of any pressing issues, updates and information. ParentSquare is also an app you can download on your phone and set up your personal communication preferences. Seeing too many emails? You can adjust your notification preferences to digest mode and only receive one email from both your child(ren)'s school and the district in one readers digest format (click here to see how!). You can also enable text and push notifications (which we recommend in case of emergency).
In an effort to effectively and efficiently communicate with our staff, families, and community members, the Redlands Unified School District has adopted an electronic flyer communication tool, Peachjar. If you have any questions regarding this new digital flyer service, please email peachjar@redlands.k12.ca.us
The district also uses social media to share positive stories and happenings throughout the district, in addition to important dates and reminders. You can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn!
School Site Communication
School site communication varies depending on site and grade level. However, all sites will send out either weekly or monthly newsletter-style communication through ParentSquare. For questions related to school site communication, please reach out to the site directly!
