Competitive Season Recap
Bands of America- This year, we moved up classifications from 2A to 3A. There are tons more bands in 3A which makes the competition much more difficult.
Austin Scores- 62.1- a very respectable starting score, very appropriate for being early season. Our music scores were weaker than our marching scores.
Westerner Marching Festival- 4th place overall, Outstanding 5A Band. Technically, Lubbock High was ahead of us, but because they host, the are not eligible for the award.
Lubbock-2658
Lubbock-Cooper-2536
Plainview-2365
Coronado-2095
Monterey-1891
Midland Scores- 66.825- A huge jump in two weeks! We were the highest ranking UIL 5A at this contest.
UIL- 1-2-1. Not our best run. We had tuning issues because of the cold, and we had trouble with energy and endurance because of the quick turn around from Wichita Falls.
Coronado- 111
Lubbock High- 112
Plainview- 221
Monterey-222
UIL Area Scores- Our prelims run was the best performance we've had of the season. When you look at the numbers, one judge had us in state-qualifying-zone during prelims, and it was a MUSIC judge! Music has lagged behind marching all season, so this week the kids have stepped up their game. Our total was 30, which put us tied with Belaire and one point behind Del Valle.
We were so very excited to have our very first 5A Area Finals appearance. This is only the 3rd opportunity we've had since jumping classifications from old 3A to new 5A. It's my personal opinion that our excitement and nerves got the best of us during our finals performance. We had some phasing issues that were not there in the morning. We also had a loss of energy towards the end of the performance (The band had a 5am call time, they were tired.). I still think it was one of our top three or four runs of the season though.
From here, we still have two more season football games. We will perform the show at both of them. We've put in so much hard work and taken the band to new heights, so it's important to show off our Finalist band to the Pirate community and continue to have fun making music together.
The band staff is thankful for the awesome competitive season we've had. Thank you for bringing your kids every day at 7am. Thank you for volunteering to help feed the kids, ride the buses, move equipment, build things, pull trailers, and so much more. There is no way these kids could have a successful season without your support. THANK YOU!
What's Next?
Football playoff season will keep us going for a few more weeks after that. We will not perform the Monopoly show. Instead, we will play some fun popular tunes on the field. Please mark Thursday through Saturday on your calendar for each weekend through December. We only know 5-7 days in advance where the next playoff game will be. Playoff game attendance is mandatory for all band and guard students.
In class, we will begin the transition to concert season. Auditions are due on November 1st, and then we will place students into bands. We will start preparing for our Christmas Concert in December.
