From the Office of the Athletic Director:
Spring sports are right around the corner! It is amazing how fast the winter season goes. I am writing to invite you to our spring sports sign up night here at Monomoy Regional High School. This will take place on Monday March 14th at 5 PM in the gymnasium. Format for the evening will be a brief presentation about the athletic department, a brief presenation on concussions by our athletic trainer Taylor Murray, and breakout sessions with each coach regarding schedules, team rules and expectations, and collection of the pre participation head injury form.
There are a few things you can do to be prepared for the first day of spring sports (offerings are attached), which will be Monday March 21st.
1. Sign up on FAMILY ID by MARCH 17th: https://www.familyid.com/programs/high-school-spring-sports-2016-athletic-registration
2. Be sure your athlete has had a physical in the last 13 months (state law) You can also check to see the date of your son or daughter's last physical right on ASPEN. All physical paperwork should be turned in directly to the school nurse, Cheryl Dufault: cdufault@monomoy.edu
3. FIll out the attached pre-participation head injury form and bring it to your coach on spring sports sign up night.
4. Be sure your son or daughter has scheduled an IMPACT test with our athletic trainer, Taylor Muray: tmurray@monomoy.edu
*Side note: Winter sports awards night will be held on Monday March 28th at 630 PM in the auditorium: Refreshments will be served prior to the evening at 6 PM in the cafeteria. More details to come!
Thank you for your support throughout the first two seasons here at Monomoy Regional High School. I look forward to working with you all this spring.

This week 8th grade students in Ms. Eastman's class have been learning about density. Here they made "Density Rainbows" with salt water.
Tory Bessette Wins!
The Graphic Design class participated in the 2016 Cape Cod Times Classroom Times "Create-An-Ad" contest and MRHS' Tory Bessette created the winning design for Davis Financial Services.
Her ad was chosen by the judges to run in the upcoming April 2016 edition of the Classroom Times. This is a real ad that the participating business has paid their standard advertising fee to run. Not only did Tory's ad win for our client, she placed 2nd overall for the Ad competition in the Grade 9-12 category.
Students in Ms. Flint's Class Prepare for Live Viewing of Knee Replacement
The live knee-replacement surgery is quickly approaching! In preparation for viewing, Ms. Flint’s Anatomy students worked together to create a model of a hinge joint. Students took on the roles of surgeon, physician’s assistant and scrub nurse. It was a difficult procedure, but most made it through without puncturing their gloves (tested by filling them with water at the end of the surgery). Trust us – it’s harder than it looks! On to the live surgery on March 21st!

The Great Transcendentalists in Ms. Forte-Doyle's Class
Mrs. Forte-Doyle’s three American Literature classes have been studying the great Transcendentalists: Emerson, Thoreau, and Whitman. From videos, power-points, and posters on Emerson’s philosophy to replicas of Thoreau’s cabin at Walden, and eventually, to free verse poems in Whitman’s style and their own “Songs of Myself,” the students have not only read transcendental writings but have also made personal connections. During this transcendental unit, students have either read Krakauer’s Into the Wild or McBride’s The Color of Water. Both non-fiction novels have protagonists that put transcendental ideas into reality. Analysis journals, tests, and essays also assess students’ understanding of the unit.
After Prom Party March 24, 2016 - The parent after prom party committee is looking for volunteers!
The Junior Prom is fast approaching it will be here before we know it. A few parents have been meeting over the past few months to initiate, organize, and create an agenda for the parent driven after Prom Party. In order to make this a fun and safe event we will need several parents, and or staff to help this event come together smoothly. We are looking for a large group of volunteers to help with set up, clean up and of course during the party as well. Please email Noreen Marchese - normarchese@yahoo.com, or Karen Small - smallconstuction@comcast.net if you are able to help out in any way, even a small amount of time is appreciated! We realize time is precious, and most of us have numerous other obligations, however if we all come together, only a small amount of time from each of us will be needed. We have a great group of Juniors, lets make this a memorable night for them!
Hoops for Heart Fundraiser Yuge Success!
The 2016 Hoops for Heart 3 on 3 basketball tournament brought in over $250 for the American Heart Association. There were 14 teams that signed up to play and each team put forth a valiant effort. The two teams in the finals were the Staff team and Team Camo, Let's Go!! The Staff team left everything they had out on the court, but Team Camo, Let's Go came out victorious. Great fun was had by all and thank you to everyone who donated to such a great cause!!

Shark "Shout Outs" (SSO's) - MRHS's way of Appreciating the Great People here!
Shark Shout Outs are spreading fast & furious at MRHS. We start every staff meeting with Shout Outs to colleagues and Shout Out to students nominated for student of the month during am announcements. Now, students and Parents are welcome to send in a Shark Shout Out as a token of appreciating other students and staff in the school. Email Mr. Burkhead at bburkhead@monomoy.edu, or drop them off to Ms. Hooper in the main office! The enthusiasm is contagious!
I would like to send a Shark Shout out to everyone involved in the upcoming Addams Family production. Ms. Donovan, Ms. Richard, Ms. Kosloski, the entire cast, crew, and pit band have worked countless hours practicing and preparing! These adults and students are often staying at school until 8pm while balancing their other commitments. I hope our school community will come out to support their efforts by attending the show, I know our family is looking forward to it.
Thank you,
The Hayden Family

Library-Media Center News
Our Library Media Center has been extremely busy since coming back to school from holiday break. Eighteen classes across all 5 grades have visited the media center multiple times to work on research assignments. All of our 8th graders have been trained to compile works cited pages, take original notes, and organize information into an outline in NoodleTools. Additionally, our students are learning to take advantage of our online databases and eBooks so they have access to our collection 24/7.
