Weekly UPA Jaguar Newsletter

September 8th, 2020

Hello UPA Families,

Last week, UPA had the best attendance of any OUSD middle school, with 99% of students attending at least one class each day of the week. Thank you to all the family support that was needed to make this happen! Students have been taking distance learning seriously, and teachers are working hard to provide high quality instruction.

NEW Distance Learning Schedule Starting on Today Tuesday, September 8th:

UPA will be using a NEW Distance Learning Schedule starting Today Tuesday, September 8th. The schedule will provide more live instruction time to students and follow district guidelines on instructional minutes. The classes that students are enrolled in will not change. Click on these links for the grade level schedules:

6th grade Distance Learning Schedule

7th grade Distance Learning Schedule

8th grade Distance Learning Schedule

Students have all been emailed their cohort specific schedule to their student email account. Note that some ELD students have schedules that are different than the rest of their grade level, so please refer to the schedule that has been emailed to your student.

UPA Outdoor Library Starts This Week!:

Students should be reading independently for 30 minutes every day. Does your student need an interesting book to read during this time? Come to the Outdoor UPA Library every Wednesday from 1:30 P.M. - 3:30 P.M. and Thursday from 3:00 P.M. - 4:30 P.M. Students can pick a book to check out and return when they are done with it. You must wear a mask and observe social distancing rules during the outdoor library.

Have You Made Your Family Account on Canvas Yet?:

Our first grade reporting period ends on September 11th. Please create a Family Account on Canvas to support your student to complete any missing work before grades are due. Here are the steps to follow to do this:

  1. First search on your phone App store for Canvas Parent and download it onto your phone.

  2. Follow this link: How to create a Parent Account on Canvas on Apple iPhone (English)

  3. If you need a new pairing code, text the school on Talking Points.

Student Camera Use During Virtual Class:

During our Grade Level Orientations last week, we shared that teachers want students to turn on their camera during class so that we can increase social interaction and so that teachers can see student facial expressions during learning. We have learned that many students are not yet comfortable enough with Zoom class to do this. We do not want to force students to turn their cameras on, instead we are working on building trusting and positive relationships between the student, the teacher, and between students so that everyone can feel comfortable with their camera on. We do not want students to receive consequences at home, or in class if they are not yet comfortable turning on their camera.

OUSD Hotspot - Data is Limited:

If you received a Hotspot from UPA, please know that the data provided is limited. You should only use the hotspot for school. Students should not use the OUSD hotspot for video games, or streaming videos that are not school related. If your OUSD hotspot is no longer working well, please call Mrs. Glendy at (510) 379-0443 so we can schedule a time to replace it.

Oakland Reach Virtual Family Hub:

The Oakland REACH has built a City-wide Virtual Hub with the following free services to families:
