STUDENT OF THE WEEK: Nominated by Candace Sjogren
Mercedes is a perfect example of resilience in action. She has renewed her commitment to her education, and is consistently taking personal and academic strides towards a successful future. She has taken countless action steps to turn around her attendance, a large part of which was consistently following through on attendance make-ups.
What many people may not know about Mercedes academic path at Central is that she is currently participating in the district gifted and talented program for both math and reading. Her advanced problem solving math course goes beyond finding the answer to looking at how to apply mathematical concepts to find multiple ways to solve problems. She will also be working on researching the needs of first generation college students in preparation for her own college career, as well as creating resources for future students to be able to use.
Mercedes is a dedicated, hardworking student with a passion for racial justice and student advocacy. She has a picture of what she wants for her future with multiple areas she is considering studying in college, and is focused on meeting her goals.
Congratulations to Heather FitzSimmons: A woman of the year for 2017!
