- The editor of "The Arab Observer" in Cairo, Egypt. Editor of the "Africa Review" in Accra,Ghana. She wrote "Afro-Americans in the Arts" a PBS special.
- National Medal of Arts in 2000, Medal of Freedom in 2010, And was nominated for the National Book Award.
- Her real name is Marguerite Johnson.
