Sunset Housekeeping Notes
October 1 - October 5
Mission: Sunset will educate and INSPIRE students to THRIVE in an environment of change.
Message from Hafey
Whew! Last week was a whirl wind! Successful, busy, and memory making! THANK YOU all for being supportive of one another! Also, HUGE SHOUT OUT to everyone for another great Cardboard Challenge day! I saw and experienced some great thinking, saw/heard some great problem solving, and creativity! In addition, 5th grade did a wonderful job in representing Sunset in the Parade and the Student Sunshine committee led the Sunset gang in our chant! THANK YOU everyone! Hopefully, the next few weeks will be 'normal' and our routines back on track!
Love ya all,
JH
House Meetings - Next Steps
Please plan on a House Meeting this week! During this time, please work on completing the following:
1. Goal Setting (Bulldog Books, Dibels scores, AR, Attendance...)
2. Make a banner to represent your House....
3. Think about a song, a chant, a skit....to work on as a team
4. Team Building Activities
5. Review the Have It All song by Jason Mraz
Please let me know when your meetings are! If you need any data pulled, let me know (PBIS Points, Behavior of grade level - incidents/place...) and I can have it ready for your House Meeting!
Early Literacy Grant Goals 2018-2019
As we begin our Data Dialogues this week, I'd like to share out the goals of the ELG! Sunset did reach and surpass these goals, but wanted to make sure you all knew what we will be working towards this year!
1. Make above to well above average progress moving students out of the well below benchmark category as measured by DIBELS Next.
2. Make above to well above average progress moving students into the benchmark category as measured by DIBELS Next.
3. Make 50% of students scoring below benchmark up at least one performance category.
One of our school goals will be to reach our ELG goals! Our 2nd school goal will be based off the LET (Literacy Evaluation Tool) that the PACE Setters completed, we will have one additional school goal! More to come on this! Once shared, then I will push this out to each of your RANDA Professional Goals section!

PACE Setters Meeting Update:
Sunset's PACE Setters team met twice over the last 2 weeks to discuss and finalize decisions in regards to:
1. Literacy Evaluation Tool - completed and will share out with you all and Mel
2. Data Dialogue Protocol - we will remain with the same protocol as last year, same documentation process
3. Reading Observation and Implementation Plan document - I will be sharing with you a 2 sided document that lists all the components that Mel will be wanting to observe throughout the upcoming year! Just know, I realize that when we come in Mel and I may not see some of these components due to the timing of your lesson and/or where we are in the learning process - so please just preview and this will be our work this year. I will also be using this document to document and help us all grow from in the upcoming weeks - so we can become familiar with the tool! Please let me know if you have any questions!
Feedback from Mel...
Here are some universal, school wide suggestions that came about from our walk throughs:
1. Spicing up reading - rather than always popcorn/round robin reading routines (see link below - Crazy Professor Reading Game)
2. Repetition, repetition, repetition....provide lots of whole class responses - to allow all students to participate...look for opportunities for this rather than one on one work with students - trying to include all students working with you at the moment of time
3. All small reading groups should be equipped with white boards for explicit teaching purposes at their stations - if you are needing this, please send Mrs. Hafey an email asap!
4. Reading/Writing graphic organizers used - for example, many of you were working on narrative stories - she was looking for the Narrative text structure graphic organizer to connect reading to writing - in which I do agree with. I will put a copy of this in your boxes to spark your memory. If you would like to see this in action - please come see me - as I have teachers that demonstrated this with perfection and/or contact Shawn, Heather, or Jen to model this for you!
5. Would like to see the week's vocabulary posted throughout the week for students to refer back to. In many of the classes - this was documented as you worked with your class and then erased....I have a thought, if you need one as to how this can be done!
Mel was very impressed with:
1. Routines
2. Classroom Management
3. Intervention schedule
4. Time spend on Literacy
5. Data Dialogue protocol
6. Culture
