The Dragons' Lair
October Edition
From the Principals
Hello Dragon Families:
We hope everyone had a fantastic much-deserved Fall Break! We are excited to get back into our routines and begin our second quarter of learning. The first quarter flew by, with a few eLearning bumps. We hope that we are past that and can stay in school for the remainder of the school year!
Tomorrow, Oct. 12, is our picture retake day and our class picture day. If you were not happy with their first picture, simply send that package back tomorrow and your child will be able to get their retake. All students will take part in our class pictures tomorrow as well.
Basketball season is upon us. We will have several opportunities for the kids, both girls and boys very soon. I have shared information from Coach Hoffman about the boys' developmental league that started tonight. Also, our fifth-grade girls held try-outs today and tomorrow. Coach Bays will be communicating who made the team and information about practices. Practices for the fifth-grade girls' team will be Monday-Thursday after school until 5:00. Fourth-grade girls will have try-outs on Tuesday, Oct. 19 from 6:30-8:00 at SCE's gym. There will be a parent meeting at 8 PM on the 19th with Coach Wright. Practice for the fourth-grade girls will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 PM. The fifth-grade boys' basketball team's season will start after the girls' season concludes.
We are always looking for substitute teachers! If you are interested in this, please let us know! This is a great way to be at school when your children are here and get paid for your time! Contact our central office for more information, 812-246-3375.
We would like to invite you to participate in our school improvement council. This is an opportunity to provide your perspective on school improvement initiatives here at SCE. If you are interested in joining, please click on this link for more information.
As always we want to thank you for your partnership! We appreciate the honor of working with your children every day!

Parent Portal
If you have not created your Parent Portal account, you will want to do this as soon as possible. This account will follow your child as long as they are enrolled in an SCSC school. This is where you can access grading information, attendance information, update your contact information, complete annual registration, and make payments to your child's account.
If you do not have access to your parent portal please email your name, your student's name, and your email on file to SCEPortal@scsc.school.
Report cards will be posted on the portal on Thursday after each quarter ends.
Standards Based Report Card
Silver Creek Elementary uses a standards-based grading system to report to families their child's progress. We want to specifically share with you your child's strengths and areas of growth. We have worked over the summer to become more intentional on our reporting systems. In the past, we have used 1- 3 scale to report on each standard. Our second grade is going to continue with that scale, which aligns with SCP.
For grades 3-5, we saw the need to be more specific and align with ILEARN's reporting system. We worked and developed the following scale that is now based on a 1-4 range as outlined on the report card.
Please see this chart to better understand how our grades are assigned by the standard.
Fall Parties
This year we will have our Fall Parties on Oct. 29th. Due to COVID restrictions, we are not inviting parents into the building at this time.
Thank you to our PTO parents and volunteers for helping each classroom have a successful party. One parent from each room is working to help plan and organize the games and treats. As a reminder, anything sent into the building to be passed out must be here 24 hours in advance. Any food items must be store-bought and must be individually wrapped.
Students will be allowed to wear their Halloween costumes to school on Oct. 29th. These costumes must be school-appropriate. There should be no scary or gory costumes and the face can not be totally covered.
Masks
Any donations for child-sized disposable masks would be appreciated. Thank you!
