2018-2019 Quarter 3 Golden Mouse Edition
The Golden Mouse Award goes to an innovative teacher who encompasses a passion for learning with technology and works as an example to others in the use of instructional technology. AND THE NOMINEES FOR THE 2018-2019 Quarter 3 GOLDEN MOUSE AWARD ARE. . .
SEM - Mrs. Maes
Mrs. Maes' students used a Kahoot! to review multiplication using arrays. They were also given a Google Doc through Google Classroom to complete. Each student was given a different multiplication problem on the Doc and an icon to duplicate in order to create an array to represent their problem. Mrs. Maes showed the students how to copy and paste icons to create the arrays and how to choose new images. The students were very excited when they could choose their own images to use for the arrays!
SES - Mr. Van Wormer
These kindergartners were practicing digraphs using Kahoot! Each table had one Chromebook to share. Mr. Van Wormer modeled for the students how to get on the Kahoot! and type in their team names. The students worked as a team to answer each question. A picture would come up, such as a "thumb" and students would have to pick the correct digraph for that beginning or ending sound. The Chromebook was rotated around the table so that each student was given a turn to "click" the answer. The students were so excited to see their scores!
YMS - Mrs. Mulvey
These 6th graders were working on determining the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings. They were reading an article called "Father of Rock and Roll" about Chuck Berry in the iReady textbook. Mrs. Mulvey used the option to annotate over the text to highlight and underline specific pieces of the text as they reviewed. They used Plickers to review the previous lesson and used the text to defend or add on to each other's answers. When students were questioning the "duck walk" that the article talked about, Mrs. Mulvey showed them an online video of Chuck Berry performing this signature move.
EES - Mrs. Brookhart
These 5th grade students were working on Main Idea and Details. They started with a review and a Plickers exit ticket where the students had to identify the correct main idea of the passage. The students were cheering that more had gotten "green" than the day before. One student asked, "Can we do another one?" After the review, students were split into their center groups. One group was working on educationgalaxy.com which has online assessment, practice, and instruction for students that can be assigned by standard. One student was excited to tell me all about this site and the activities he uses on it. Another group was using freckle.com, a differentiation platform, for word work. These students were very eager to share the work they are doing on these sites!
NES - Mrs. Nolte
During gifted instructional time, Mrs. Nolte's 4th and 5th grade classes participated in something called the Stock Market Game. In this game, teams are given $100,000.00 of virtual money to invest in a simulated stock market. The SIFMA Foundation’s simulation mirrors what is going on in the real stock market exactly. Students can buy stock in real companies like Amazon or Pepsi, and their stock will gain or lose value exactly as the stocks are performing in real life. The game lasts nine weeks, and the goal is to make as much money as possible. Technology was an INTEGRAL part of this game as they did all of their company research online, primarily through yahoo!finance, and every aspect of buying/selling stock and monitoring their investments was done via an online portfolio. Two of Mrs. Nolte's teams won 1st and 2nd place in the regional competition!
CES - Mrs. Miller
Mrs. Miller's students were working in math centers. Each center had a form of technology being used for math practice. The teacher-led group was using the new Study Island challenges (similar to Kahoot!) to practice measurements of angles. Another group was answering questions about angles on a Google Form shared through Google Classroom and the third group was working on iReady and Reflexmath activities. All of her students were using 1:1 Chromebooks and practicing the math standard in different ways, engaged in their work, and accountable for completing it!
AND THE WINNER IS. . . .
Danielle Maes!!
Mrs. Maes' students were applying what they had learned by creating arrays using a Google Doc assigned on Google Classroom. They were so excited to personalize their arrays with their own pictures and icons. Their excitement increased with the review on Kahoot! Congratulations Mrs. Maes!
