Term Four, Week Six - 18 November 2020
Principal - Luke Shaw
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
I remind our parents and caregivers that our Annual General Meeting (AGM) will take place in the MacKillop Centre tonight (Wednesday 18 November), at 7:00pm. This meeting provides an opportunity for the school community to reflect on the 2020 school year and look ahead to 2021.
SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION
I congratulate our students who received the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday 15 November. I thank our teachers, Rebecca Miles and Althea Footman, for preparing our students for this Sacrament, with the support of Mike Sibbald (Assistant Principal – Religious Education). I also thank Fr Benny and Fr Liam for leading this celebration.
We look forward to our swimming carnival on Friday 20 November. This was due to take place earlier in the year but needed to be postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions. While it is wonderful that we have been able to reschedule this event, there are still several precautions that need to be in place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. Please see the letter from Sam Harris, contained in this newsletter, for further information. Thank you, Sam, for your organisation of this event.
Last week we celebrated NAIDOC Week. We took a different approach this year, with celebration activities taking place throughout the week, rather than on one day. Students engaged in a range of activities and we came together as a school on Wednesday afternoon for a special assembly. We finished the week with a kangaroo sausage sizzle and enjoyed the beautiful sand-art, located along our walkway. Thank you to Kayah Wills (Aboriginal Teacher Assistant) and Sara Faraone (Key Teacher Aboriginal Perspectives) for their organisation of the week.
I thank Robin Dalziell and the students for leading our Remembrance Day service this week. This service provided us with an opportunity to stop and reflect on the sacrifice that men and women in service have made for our country.
NIGHT OF THE NOTABLES
Alison Yeo has been working with a group of students this term, as they prepare for their Night of the Notables presentation. This will take place on Wednesday 25 November. Parents of students involved have been invited to attend from 3:20pm-4:15pm, along with staff. Students from Years Four and Five will have the opportunity to attend earlier that afternoon. We look forward to meeting our ‘notables’!
We recently advertised for a part-time Early Childhood teacher for 2021. The appointment process has now been finalised. I am delighted to inform you that Nicole Smith is the successful applicant. Nicole, a former St Brigid’s student, is currently on parental leave from Mary’s Mount Primary School. As well as being a classroom teacher at Mary’s Mount, Nicole also has experience as Digital Technologies Lead Teacher. We look forward to Nicole joining our community next year.
Sara Faraone will be taking parental leave next year. Sara and her husband Ben will be welcoming their first child in 2021. Congratulations!
I congratulate Michael Sheridan (5B Teacher) and his wife Amanda, on the arrival of their baby girl, Abigail Lily Sheridan. Abigail was born on 28 October. I also congratulate Rhianna Shirren (currently on parental leave) and her husband Liam on the arrival of their daughter, Tessa Grace Shirren. Tessa was born on 5 November.
On Wednesday 2 December, all our students will be attending our whole school transition morning 9.10am-10.40am. This will give our students an opportunity to meet their 2021 classroom teacher and fellow students. We believe this initiative will relieve concern around the beginning of the 2021 school year. Parents will be informed formally of classroom teacher arrangements for 2021 in the newsletter on Wednesday 2 December.
We look forward to our Kindy Orientation session on Monday 23 November at 4:00pm. This important meeting will provide parents with information relating to the 2021 Kindergarten program. Please note that this session is for parents only, not children. Kindy students will have the opportunity to ‘drop-in’ and see the classroom on Monday 1 February 2021 – more information regarding this will be provided during the orientation session.
We are in the final stages of developing our new school website. Videographers will be onsite tomorrow to film students engaging in their learning.
END OF YEAR CONCERT
Our annual End of Year Concert will be taking place on Friday 4 December, at 6:00pm. This will take place on the soccer pitch, beside the MacKillop Centre. Due to COVID-19 requirements, this will be a ticketed event. All students are expected to attend, with a maximum of two adults per family. Should you wish to attend, please download your ticket at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/127828844515. Please note, students do not require a ticket. Families are to bring their own picnic rug and/or fold-out chairs to maintain physical distancing and are not to engage with students during the event. Please see the letter from Alison Yeo, contained within this newsletter, for further information.
PRE-KINDY & KINDY 2021
Places for both programs are filling up fast, with our Kindy classes close to capacity. I encourage our existing families, who are yet to enrol their child in Pre-Kindy or Kindy, to do so as soon as possible.
Assistant Principal - Mike Sibbald
Our Confirmation Mass was a great success, due largely to the wonderful and supportive congregation. Congratulations to all Candidates for your excellent preparation and purposeful participation when receiving your Confirmation. The readers were admirable, and the choir sang passionately! Mrs Yeo is to be commended for her wonderful tutelage! Many thanks and congratulations go to our fantastic Year Six Teachers, Ms Miles & Ms Footman as well as Mrs Willis, for assisting with the audio-visual projector. A special thank you also, to Father Benny and Father Liam for being our Confirmation Celebrants, and to all parents and sponsors.
Congratulations to our Year Three Classes who celebrated their class Liturgy last week, focusing on ‘Forgiveness’. Thank you also, to Fr Liam for leading our liturgy and to the parents who supported our prayer gathering. Year Two have their class liturgy next week (Tuesday 24 November at 9.00am in the MacKillop Hall).

We have finalised our booklists for 2021 and these are now available on our website for parents and caregivers to download. An information sheet is also attached to the booklist with instructions regarding purchase and collection. We are not providing paper copies.
Last week, I explained the subscriptions that have been added to the booklist for Kindergarten to Year 2. In this week’s newsletter, subscriptions for Years 3 to 6 are explained.
iMaths Online: In 2021 we will continue to use iMaths Online across the school. Teachers will be able to download different resources at point of need. This allows classroom teachers greater flexibility to cater for the individual learning needs within their classrooms. Many schools are moving away from using a standard text book these days to allow for greater flexibility within the classroom. Our learners are all different and, therefore, require access to different resources during their learning experiences.
Wushka: Wushka is a cloud-based digital school reading program, carefully levelled to support students learning to read. Wushka has been developed using decades of educational publishing experience. The extensive selection of over 600 fiction and non-fiction levelled readers are stored in Wushka’s coloured digital reading boxes. Every levelled reader is supported by an online comprehension quiz and printable teacher support material including lesson plans and assessment and progress tracking. Wushka complements our current reading programs as there is an alignment to our levelling systems. Teachers can easily manage and track reading groups for at school, and at-home reading. Our students in Years 3-6 will require Wushka in 2021.
Sound Waves Online provides all the digital resources students need

After School Pick-Up
We would like to remind parents and caregivers that school finishes at 3:00pm and we thank parents who arrive on time to collect their child/children. We appreciate that there is a fair amount of traffic at 3:00pm and therefore supervision is extended to 3.30. Please be aware that there is no supervision after 3.30pm therefore, for your child's safety, it is imperative that children are collected by 3.30pm. Thank you for your co-operation.
