Creekside Chronicle
February 2020 Newsletter
Administrative Update
We had a great kickoff to 2020 with recognizing all of our students achieving honor roll and high honor roll. We were also fortunate enough to have our Jazz Band play and welcome our families. This is not only a way for us to recognize the success of so many students, but also a chance for Creekside to connect with the parents. During our 2nd quarter honors recognition, we were able to discuss the upcoming 8th grade activities, our PTO Dominos Fundraiser, and also our new Falcon’s Nest where we have supplies for those families in need.
Conferences
Parent Teacher conferences are just around the corner, and we would love to see you there. Conferences are held on February 13 from 2-9 p.m. and again on February 14 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. We are again using the Meet the Teacher App to schedule the conferences. If you have any trouble, please contact the main office; we are happy to help.
Student of the Month
A huge shout out to our December and January Students of the Month. These students demonstrated perseverance throughout the month and stood out to the Creekside staff. Congratulations, Falcons!
January: Emma Barrett, Kristina Booth, Brooke Kashmire , Jamahl Mumford, Brett Neuhart, Vivanna Ortiz Ortiz, and Olivia Roth.
Dual Degree Program
We have had a lot of excitement with our 8th graders during the month of January. We enjoy the ability to share this exciting time with our 8th graders as they prepare for high school. If your student has not currently taken Algebra, the high school has designed a new summer course to get them ahead. This course will open up further opportunities for students as it would then put them on track for the Dual Degree Program. Contact the office, or your student’s math teacher, for more information. See more about the Dual Degree Program HERE.
2020 Groundhog Dinner & Auction
This year's Groundhog Day Dinner & Auction will be held on Feb. 8 at Woodstock Harley-Davidson. Robert Hackbart is this year's honoree for the Sue Palmore Award of Excellence. Here at Creekside, we are excited to honor the man that opened Creekside. Mr. Hackbart did not just serve as the Principal at Creekside, he was also an administrator, teacher, and coach for District 200. One of the big changes at the auction this year is that much of the business, including the actual bidding for auction items on the night of the event, will be done online. Ticket sales are also being handled online, and there is an option to purchase tables. This year, paper tickets will not be available at the District Office nor anywhere else. Check out this link for more information and to purchase tickets.

In DL literacy we have started a novel titled: Las cosas perdidas. We have been analyzing the implicit and explicit characteristics of the characters.
Mrs. Stone’s Read 180 class finished Workshop Two. They created posters to help conserve water. Be sure to check them out in the 7th-grade hallway during conferences!
Mrs. Stone’s and Mrs. Coleman’s literacy class had mystery readers come in to read memoirs.
8th Grade
Illinois Memorial Holocaust Museum - Students will travel to the Illinois Memorial Holocaust Museum in Skokie on February 25th and 27th. This culminating activity for their unit of study on the Holocaust from World War II.
In Social Studies we have been closing out studying the decades of the 1920s(Roaring 20s) and the 1930s (Great Depression) and their impact on current day policies. Kids were given the opportunity to become experts on various topics from each decade, including Prohibition, Jazz and Renaissance Movement, Entertainment, Stock Market Crash and Causes of the Great Depression. Students investigated the possible answers to the inquiry question “Why did America change its mind on Prohibition?”
Students in Mr. Schleutermann and Mr. Ortiz’s History classes trying to answer the inquiry question:
Congrats ...to all of the CMS kids who had work in the D200 Art Show!
Band News
The Band Room has been busy and everyone has been working hard to get back into the swing of things. There are a lot of fun things on our horizons! Congratulations to all of the students who participated in Solo and Ensemble contest!
I’d like to invite all CMS band members to stay after school on Friday, February 7 from 3:30 - 6:00pm for a Band Only Movie Night. I’m still deciding which movie we will watch, but if your child is interested in coming, keep an eye out for the permission slip that will come home soon.
The Jazz Band will be providing half-time and down-time entertainment at the Girls Home Basketball game on Monday, February 24! The Color Guard will coordinate a show to go along with a song with us. It will be an awesome experience! Please put that on the calendar. ALL Jazz band students should be coming on Tuesdays and Thursdays until further notice.
8th grade parents: Please be sure to have Friday, April 3 and Saturday April 4 on your calendars. This date has been on my event calendar that was sent home at the beginning of the year. We are going to travel to North Central College in Naperville for the Prairie State Middle School Band Festival. The organizers have NOT YET assigned us our day, so I am unsure if it will be Friday afternoon/evening or on Saturday. PLEASE have these dates blocked out so that everyone can participate. We need everyone! We will perform in the beautiful auditorium for a panel of highly respected band directors from around the country. They will give us comments and then we will have a clinic with one of the judges. It will be an amazing experience and opportunity for our students.
Box Tops
Box Tops are going digital! No more clipping, all you need is your phone. Download the ALL-NEW Box Tops app, shop as you normally would, then simply scan your store receipts to find participating products. The app will automatically credit Creekside’s Box Tops earnings online. Printed Box Tops are being phased out and will only be accepted through this fall. If you have any clipped Box Tops, Creekside will accept them only through October 15. Here is a video link that shows how to set up your phone to easily send Creekside money from your grocery receipts. https://www.boxtops4education.com/About\
