I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings

A Poetry One Pager by Emily Lamb

Key Words

The five key words I chose are clipped, tied, sing, caged, and free. I chose the words clipped and tied because the text states " his wings clipped.." which indicates that freedom had it's limits during the civil rights movements. I then chose the word sing because there were not a lot of people who stood up and made a difference during the civil rights movement. I chose the word caged because African- Americans were treated horribly during the civil rights movement. I choose the word free because after a long time African-Americans were finally free.

Important Text

"The caged bird sings

with fearful thrill

of the things unknown

but longed for still

and his tune is heard

on the distant hill for the caged bird

sings of freedom"

- Maya Angelou

I chose this part of I know why the caged bird sings because it had the most meaning to me. I feel like this part of the poem is talking about the strong people who stood up for what is right.

Poetic Divice

"The caged bird sings with fearful thrill." I chose this part of the poem because the caged bird refers back to African-Americans and white people who stood up for what was right now matter how scary it was.

Relate

My image, key words, and quotations all relate to each other because they all mean the same thing to me. They mean that African-Americans were horribly treated just because of the color of there skin, what a stupid reason to torture people huh? I always think that if the people who were torturing the poor African-Americans that the thought to torture people because of something they can not control, would never cross their mind.
