Tamanend Talent Show Auditions Are Due By May 15

Our annual talent show is back IN PERSON this year! The talent show will be held during the school day – in the morning on Wednesday, June 8th. You’ll get to show your talents to the whole school – a Tamanend tradition that has been sorely missed the last two years! If you have a talent that can be shared on the Tamanend stage, you should tryout! We’re talking to you singers, instrumentalists, dancers, martial artists, gymnasts, magicians, etc. If you are interested, you need to do three things by Sunday night, May 15th.

  1. Check your availability for after school rehearsals on Tuesday, May 31st and Tuesday, June 7th. Also confirm that you will be in school on Wednesday, June 8th. You must attend BOTH rehearsals to perform in the talent show on the 8th. Rehearsals will go as late as 5pm.
  2. Fill out THIS FORMS SURVEY – one survey per act please (ex. if you are singing a duet, fill out the survey together, from one performer’s account.
  3. SUBMIT AN AUDITION VIDEO that shows your act. Your video submission is due by Sunday night, May 15th.

Deadline to Order Yearbook

Saturday, April 30

The cost of the hard-covered, full color yearbook is $40 plus tax. There will unfortunately NOT be an extension to this date, since the yearbooks will be going to production. Please know that yearbooks for FRESHMEN (9th graders) are NOT included in the Freshman Day fee. Any 9th grade student that would like a yearbook needs to order it through Jostens by April 30th. Distribution of all yearbooks will be the week of June 6th. Please click the link here to take you to Jostens online ordering page.   • CB South Girls Tennis – Interest meeting. Thursday May 19 from 2:45 – 4pm at the CB South tennis courts. Bring racquets and sneakers. There will be hitting practice.
  • CB South Co-Ed Golf – Tuesday May 31, 2:30-4:00 in the Forum Room at CB South
  • This is a message for any prospective ninth graders that are interested in joining the cross-country team at Central Bucks South. There will be an interest meeting on Tuesday, May 31, at the CB South stadium. The meeting will take place from 3-3:30pm. At the meeting Coach Simpson and Coach Fantini will go over the background of the program, our goals for the upcoming season, and relay any necessary information regarding scheduling of summer voluntary practices and Family ID to runners. Athletes who attend will receive a summer training packet that details everything that will be covered at the meeting. This meeting is for interested athletes only, there will be a parent meeting once the rosters are finalized prior to the start of the new school year. This team is open to all interested participants, all are encouraged to attend. We look forward to a successful 2022 season!

Algebra Keystone Testing Takes Place Wednesday, May 18 and Thursday, May 19

Keystone Exam Participation:


The Keystone Exams are end-of-course assessments designed to assess proficiency in the subject areas of Algebra 1, Biology, and Literature. Students must sit for the exams at least once per state regulations. Students who take Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B in middle school, take the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam in May according to the building test schedule.

Students will be rostered to sit for the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam based on the following scenarios:

· They are currently enrolled in Algebra 1 or Algebra 1B. Students enrolled in other Math courses will not take the Keystone Exam this year.

· Their best score on the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam from a previous year is Basic or Below Basic.

A parent/guardian may choose to exempt their child from participating in the exam for religious reasons if the tested content is found to conflict with their religious beliefs as per PA Code 22, Chapter 4.4. To exempt your child for religious reasons a parent/guardian must complete the following actions required by the Pennsylvania Department of Education:

1. Email Mr. Kyle Dudley at kdudley@cbsd.org to request an appointment to view the exam to determine if it conflicts with your religious beliefs.

2. Report to Tamanend at the appointed time and sign Pennsylvania Department of Education's Confidentiality Agreement before viewing the exams.

3. Write a letter to the Superintendent of schools for Central Bucks School District, Dr. Abram M. Lucabaugh, stating you want your child exempted for religious reasons. Submit the letter to Mr. Kyle Dudley at kdudley@cbsd.org.


Spring 2022 Keystone Exam Administration:


The Keystone Algebra 1 Exam will be facilitated online in all five of the middle schools. Students will use their district-issued 1:1 laptop to complete the exam. The dates of the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam for Tamanend Middle School are listed below.

Information about Graduation Requirements for the Class of 2023 and beyond from the Pennsylvania Department of Education:


PA Act 158 states that students in the Class of 2023 (our current Junior class at the high school) and beyond are required to demonstrate proficiency in Algebra 1, Literature, and Biology to earn a diploma by completing one of the following pathways.

1--Keystone Proficiency Pathway: Passing (Proficient or Advanced score) all three Keystone Exams (Algebra 1, Biology, and Literature)

2--Composite Score Pathway: Scoring proficient or advanced on at least one Keystone Exam and scoring at least Basic on the other two Keystone Exams with a minimum composite score of 4452 (total when the score from Algebra 1, Biology, and Literature are added together).

3--Career & Technical Pathway: (This pertains to students in a Career Education program at Middle Bucks Institute of Technology) Earning a passing grade in a Keystone-aligned course AND either: Attaining an industry-based competency certification related to the CTE Concentrator’s program of study, OR demonstrating a high likelihood of success on an approved industry-based competency assessment or readiness for continued meaningful engagement in the CTE Concentrator’s program of study.

4--Alternate Assessment Pathway: Earning a passing grade in a Keystone-aligned course AND one of the following: Attain the minimum score on one of the following subject-aligned tests: AP Exam (3); PSAT (970); SAT (1010); ACT (21); ASVAB (minimum score required to gain admittance to a branch of the military), OR successfully complete a concurrent enrollment course in a subject-aligned course (a list of courses is pending), OR be accepted into an accredited 4-year nonprofit institution of higher education

5--Evidence-Based Pathway: Earning a passing grade in a Keystone-aligned course AND three pieces of evidence--

· At least one of the following:

o Attainment of a minimum score ACT WorkKeys assessment, SAT subject-test, or Advanced Placement Exam

o Acceptance to an accredited nonprofit institution of higher education other than a 4-year institution and evidence of the ability to enroll in college-level coursework

o Attainment of an industry-recognized credential

o Successful completion of a concurrent enrollment or postsecondary course

· Two additional pieces from the following:

o Satisfactory completion of a service-learning project (currently under development)

o Attainment of a score of proficient or advanced on a Keystone Exam

o A letter guaranteeing full-time employment

o Certificate of successful completion of an internship or cooperative education

o Satisfactory compliance with the NCAA’s core courses for college-bound student-athletes with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0.


Important Note About Opting Out of Keystone Exams


Although a student may receive a religious exemption from participating in one or more exams, this does not exempt a student in the Class of 2023 and beyond from the graduation requirements enacted with Act 158. Please understand that students in the Class of 2023 and beyond are required to demonstrate proficiency in Algebra 1, Literature, and Biology by successfully completing one of the five pathways above. They must sit for the exams at least once per state regulations.

Reminder--Next Meeting of Tamanend Parent Book Club is May 16

Join us for the Tamanend Parent Book Club. This year, we will be reading The Grown-Up’s Guide to Teenage Humans (2017) by Josh Shipp which may be purchased on a variety of websites or in bookstores. The book describes the optimal mindsets, conditions, and strategies that help teenagers succeed. This book club will follow a "no-pressure" format in which the facilitator will present a summary of the reading and open the floor for discussion. In addition, we will briefly cover items from our monthly Parent Council meeting for parents who are not able to make these meetings. We will share resources and ideas with the goal of helping the entire Tamanend parent community navigate the challenges and joys of raising adolescents. Parents are welcome to join the group at any time. It is not necessary to read all of the chapters to participate. 8th Grade Civil War Unit Continues


Last week, Mrs. Stryjak and Mrs. McFarland’s 8th grade Social Studies students really "dug in" to learn about the Battles of Vicksburg and Gettysburg. Students analyzed maps, watched videos, read primary sources, played a digital simulation, and wrote journal entries about these battles. During the Battle of Vicksburg, the citizens of the town dug caves and lived in them for weeks. To really see what the people of Vicksburg went through, students got under their desks to read and write about the citizens. Some student groups had to get 10 people under their desk! Ask your student about how it felt to stay like that for 10 minutes! Next week, look for our last installment and our final wrap up of this amazing unit!

Reminder--E-Sports League Sign-Up is Open for CBSD Students

Sign-ups are happening now for the Central Bucks School District’s official Esports League! Managed by Metro Esports, each esports season will include six weeks of virtual game play, with live playoff and league championship matches hosted at The Metro Gaming Lounge, located on Street Road in Warminster. Students in grades K-12 may participate in a combination of gaming and technology-based skills development, while engaging in an outlet for competing in a non-sport, team activity with the ability to learn about gaming industry and STEM/STEAM careers in a very hands-on way. This first of its kind competitive multi-season competitive esports League will include popular game titles like Apex Legends, Rocket League, and Fortnite. In season, the Metro facility will be available for both individual and team practice sessions and one-on-one coaching and skills training.

Elementary gaming and technology enthusiasts will be able to participate in Minecraft games, challenges and learning opportunities.

This is an opportunity for students of all ages, interest levels and abilities to pursue their interests in gaming and technology. League registration is open on the Metro Esports website at https://metroesports.gg.

This helps to reduce problem behaviors that lead to office discipline referrals and suspensions, and to change perceptions of school safety.

Reminder--CBSD Mock Trial Camp

What? A 4 day camp exploring mock trial and careers in the law. Campers will learn mock trial fundamentals, rules of evidence, and hear from speakers in a variety of careers in the legal profession. At the close of the week, all campers will participate in a full mock trial for parents and guests. The camp is led by South’s award winning team captains working alongside college alumni, attorney advisors and our teacher coach.

Reminder--Please Properly Take Care of Your Laptop

We have seen an increase in cracked laptop screens. Here are a few tips to help you properly take care of your laptop:

· Use your laptop bag when carrying your laptop in school and outside of school.

· If you have a small crack on your screen, please take it to the Library to get it fixed as soon as possible. Many times, students do not have small cracks repaired as soon as they occur. This sometimes results in the screen shattering completely.

· Please note that intentional laptop damage will result in potential disciplinary consequences and a bill for the repairs.

Reminder--Student Technology Security Outside of the U.S.

Currently, the Technology and Innovation Department blocks Microsoft Office 365 logins to Outlook, OneDrive, ClassLink, and Canvas from foreign countries. This aids in protecting our CBSD user accounts and organization from malicious computer attacks from outside of the United States.


Students who travel cannot assume their devices will work once they leave the United States. For student out-of-country access requests, please know that access to technology for vacations will not be approved at this time.

The Program Planning Timeline for current 9th grade students will continue to be shared by the Tamanend team. Reminder--Mental Health Resources

In February, Tamanend held two presentations (one for students, and one for parents) related to adolescent mental health. As a follow-up, the district social workers created this resource to assist parents with connecting their children with mental health help. Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) has been established in schools throughout Pennsylvania with the cooperative support of the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Health and Welfare. SAP programs provide schools with the means to identify, refer, and support students who are exhibiting behavioral, academic, or attendance issues that put them at risk. Every secondary school in Central Bucks has a team of dedicated school personnel who are trained to assist students, faculty and family members in identifying problems that impact the student’s ability to function in school. Reminder--Free Breakfast and Lunch for All Tamanend Students for 2021-2022 School Year

In April 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service extended the program that will provide for free meals for all students, regardless of income, for the 2021-22 school year. This has been made possible by nationwide waivers that provide for free meals for all students through June 2022.


All menus are available to be viewed online up to 2 weeks in advance by visiting cbsd.nutrislice.com.


Students are entitled to one complete reimbursable breakfast per day and one complete reimbursable lunch per day. Any second entrée or a la carte snack item will be charged to the students’ lunch account. We encourage all families to put money on their students account through MySchoolBucks.com as there will be no cash transactions this year to serve the students as safely and swiftly as possible.


We are thrilled to continue to safely serve students delicious, fresh, and nutritious meals at no charge, and we are equally excited to re-introduce our favorite programs to deliver fun, exciting, and tasty experiences to students throughout the coming year.

RESOURCES AND ASSISTANCE

Reminder--CB Farmer's Market at Barclay Elementary School

Any Central Bucks family who may need a little extra food assistance is welcome to join us on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month at Barclay Elementary School. Our drive-up food distributions run from 4:30 to 5:30 PM. We generally have free dry goods, fresh produce, milk, eggs, and bread, and often have some frozen meat and poultry. At each event we pass out an average of 12,000-15,000 pounds of food.


The CB Farmers Market started in 2019 as a monthly market that distributed free produce. At the start of the pandemic, we recognized a significant need in our community, with many families needing food assistance for the first time in their lives. As our operations grew, so did our network of amazing individuals and community organizations—all of whom are committed to addressing food insecurity in the Central Bucks School District. By our estimates, 1,500 CB children may experience temporary or chronic food insecurity—a statistic which should not exist in a community with our resources.


Our completely volunteer-run and managed organization was founded on two beliefs: 1) During times of need, which we all experience in one form or another, we should be able to count on the compassion and support of our neighbors; and 2) Our community’s collective commitment to our children is a bond much stronger than all of the other forces that might otherwise divide us.

HELPFUL REMINDERS ABOUT TAMANEND PROCEDURES

Reminder--Volunteering at Tamanend

All Central Bucks School District Volunteers play a vital role in supporting the staff, students, sports programs and other activities of our schools.

Thank you for your interest in volunteering! We are excited to introduce our NEW contactless application and paperwork submission process to our CBSD volunteers. You can now upload your clearances online through our Volunteer Tracker portal. Please click App Garden- Volunteer Tracker to sign-up and review the clearance requirements. Sign-up is required for both New and Returning Volunteers! The Volunteer Tracker will allow you to sign-up for volunteer opportunities specific to your building and/or classroom of choice. You will receive communication via email to update you on the latest upcoming event(s), clearance expiration, and to review your participation level. Clearances and Background Checks are valid for five (5) years. Click here for required documentation and further information.

Reminder--Morning Car Line

When the weather is poor (heavy rain, low temperatures, etc.), more and more parents/guardians choose to drive their children to school. A reminder that students are expected to be in their 1st Period classes by 7:30 AM. If a child is late to school because of CBSD transportation, their tardiness will be excused. If a student is late to school because of car trouble, over-sleeping, or they are in the car drop-off line, their tardiness is unexcused. Typically, there are few cars in the drop off line from when the doors open at 7:10 until about 7:20. After 7:20, the line begins to get very long.


If you drive your child to school and the weather is poor, please consider leaving home earlier so that your child arrives to class on time.

A Reminder About Medications in School

A reminder that students are not permitted to carry medication and/or self-administer medication. Per the medication policy, “All medication, both prescription and non-prescription must be kept in the school health office. Medication will be administered to student during school hours only when such medication is required and accompanied by a doctor’s order” (CBSD Medication Dispensing Form medication policy). “With parent permission, acetaminophen and ibuprofen may be administered according to the manufacturer’s suggested dosage. Administration of specific non-prescription medications is available to all students under the guidelines of the district’s chief medical director. These medications include cough drops, throat spray, antacid tablets, and antibiotic ointment. Parents may grant permission when student information is updated via the parent portal during the summer months. Students who have medications of any kind in their possession (purses, lunch boxes, school bags, etc.) may be considered in violation of the school drug and alcohol policy. However, with a doctor’s order, students requiring emergency medication (EpiPen, for example) may be permitted to carry and self-administer the medication” (2021-2022 CBSD Family Handbook).


Regarding field trips and medication:

“A nurse is not available for field trips. If a parent requests medication to be administered during the trip, this should be noted on the field trip permission form. Parents must package medications at home and hand deliver them in a sealed envelope to the teacher. The child will self-administer the medication under teacher supervision” (2021-2022 CBSD Family Handbook). Epi-pens and inhalers should be brought from home for field trips as long as the appropriate doctor’s order/competency check is on file.

Reminder--Dropping Off Items For Your Child

It's simple to drop off an item for your child! All you need to do is drop the item in the correct grade-level blue bin in the Lobby of our school. Please make sure your child's name is on the item.

If you bring your child in late to school, please follow this process:


  • ring bell to come in to Lobby
  • write note
  • send student in to Main Office—parents don’t need to come in the Main Office

Reminder--New CBSD Student Absence Reporting System

The Central Bucks School District will be changing the way in which absences are reported, beginning on the first day of school, August 30, 2021. The following items are some key points to be aware of.

  • Parents and guardians will be able to submit absence requests via the Parent Portal. Parents can request a full day absence, early dismissal, or late arrival.
  • Absence requests will be reviewed by school attendance staff and approved or denied.
  • Requests made using the parent portal will also serve as the excuse for the absence. Parents will not be required to submit an excuse either electronic or written.
  • Parents and guardians can also still call the school to report an absence, but emails will no longer be accepted.

In addition, when a student is absent from school, but the school did not receive communication from the parent or guardian, the following communication will be sent:

  • A text message will be sent midmorning notifying the parent or guardian of the absence
  • An email will also be sent at the end of the school day reminding the parent or guardian that the student was marked absent.

Reminder--Parent Drop-Off/Pick-Up & Parking Lot Safety

If parents/guardians decide to drive students to school, please plan enough travel time to allow for safety and congestion on Stuckert Road and in our school parking lot. The speed limit in our lot is 15 mph.


Below is a map of how the student drop-off works in our parking lot. Drop off should only happen along the sidewalk at the Athletics Entrance as indicated by the red dot on the map. For your safety and the safety of our students, please follow these directions and do not drop your student off on Stuckert Road, the Visitor's Parking area, or in the middle of the Main Parking Area.


When dropping off your child, please remember that YOU SHOULD ONLY MAKE A RIGHT-HAND TURN INTO/OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. Please stay to the right of the parking lot, along the sidewalk, all the way up to the Cafeteria/Gym Entrance. Pull up as far as you can when the cars in front of you clear, and let your child out there.

When picking up your child, please remember that YOU SHOULD ONLY MAKE A RIGHT-HAND TURN INTO THE PARKING LOT. The line of traffic will extend back toward the baseball field (Kelly Rd.). Please stay in the line of traffic and continue moving up as the car(s) in front of you move up. If we follow this procedure, all cars we be gone by 2:40.

TMS Parent Council

Tamanend Middle School

Parent Council is an open meeting where all parents are welcome to attend to learn more about Tamanend Middle School. Parent Council typically meets on the third Thursday of each month at 9 a.m. There is no obligation to attend all Parent Councils and there are no elected positions. Parent Council is a forum for parents and school leaders to learn from and with each other, together.
