Halloween Horror
Do you like to be scared?
Horror is a popular genre among middle schoolers. Being scared while snuggled and safe in your bed is the way to read the following books! Here are some favorite writers of horror in our library along with a few classics for good measure.
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde- Stevenson
A graphic novel retelling of the classic story of of Dr. Jekyll, who is a respectable doctor by day, but developed a potion that transforms him by night, and causes him to roam the back alleys of London as a criminal known as Mr. Hyde. Also available in the original text as part of a short story collection and also as an ebook.
The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod series by Brewer
Thirteen-year-old half-vampire Vladimir Tod struggles to navigate the ups and downs of eighth grade while keeping his untested powers and impulses under control.
Gothic: the Original Dark Tales
Presents ten original stories of vampires, ghosts, witches, and sorcerers, including selections from Joan Aiken, Neil Gaiman, Gregory Maguire, and others.
Franken-stein
Discusses the origins of the Frankenstein monster, provides a summary of the story, looks at the making of the 1931 film version of "Frankenstein," and examines the tale's relation to real science, as well as subsequent productions and merchandise. Also available in the original text and a young readers addition by Mary Wollencroft Shelly

Tales of Mystery and Madness by Edgar Allan Poe
Presents color-illustrated renditions of four of Edgar Allan Poe's horror tales, including "The Black Cat," "The Masque of the Red Death," "Hop-Frog," and "The Fall of the House of Usher."
Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children series by Riggs
Sixteen-year-old Jacob, having traveled to a remote island after a family tragedy, discovers an abandoned orphanage, and, after some investigating, he learns the children who lived there may have been dangerous and quarantined and may also still be alive.
Sisters of Blood and Spirit series by Cross

All Hallow's Eve by Vande Velde
Presents thirteen tales of Halloween horrors, including ghosts, vampires, and pranks gone awry.
Vande Velde is known for her short stories of horror. There are six additional collections of her work in our library.
City of Bones series by Clare
Suddenly able to see demons and the Darkhunters who are dedicated to returning them to their own dimension, fifteen-year-old Clary Fray is drawn into this bizarre world when her mother disappears and Clary herself is almost killed by a monster.
Revolver by Sedgwick
Fourteen-year-old Sig is stranded at a remote cabin in the Arctic wilderness with his father, who died just hours earlier after falling through the ice, when a terrifying man arrives, claiming Sig's father owes him a share of a horde of stolen gold and that he will kill Sig if he does not get his money. Our collection includes many of Sedgwick's books, all of which are written to chill.
Dead Girls of Hysteria Hall by Alender
Sixteen-year-old Cordelia and her family move into the house they just inherited in Pennsylvania, a former insane asylum the locals call Hysteria Hall--unfortunately the house does not want defiant girls like Delia, so it kills her, and as she wanders the house, meeting the other ghosts and learning the dark secrets of the Hall, she realizes that she has to find a way to save her sister, parents, and perhaps herself. Alender is a popular author of horror fiction with many more titles on our shelves.
