Fill in the blank with the most appropriate word from Lesson 3.

The job of a ____________ is to take the census and calculate national population growth rates based on the number of births and deaths nationwide every year.

The Word

Demographer (n.)

One who studies the characteristics of populations and analyzes data such as numbers, births, deaths, diseases, and other vital statistics.

*Demographers analysis can cover whole societies, or specific groups defined by criteria such as education, nationality, religion and ethnicity.

*Demographers are most often employed in government positions to take the census every ten years and help governments understand population growth.

*For example, the fact that Japan has negative population growth was determined by demographers.

Demos (G.) "People"

Graphein (G.) "To write"

When put together, these roots indicate that demographers are those who write about population trends of the people (especially of a particular nation) altogether.

-Population analyst

There are no direct antonyms because this words describes a career or profession; there is no word that is the "direct opposite" of a certain career.

Alternate Forms

Demography (n.)- Used to refer to the study of the population statistics in general rather than the person who studies the population.

Demographic (adj.)- Pertaining to, or relating to, the science of demography.

Demographers' Discoveries

Some of the demographers' discoveries, which at the time were revolutionary, but now constitute common sense, include:

* The world's population recently reached 7 billion in 2011 and has been continuing to grow.

*In general, urbanized and modern areas, such as cities, tend to have higher population densities than do rural areas.

*Families in poverty tend to have more children than wealthy families.

World Population

The world population is growing at an exponential rate, according to demographers who work for the United Nations.

City Size

Modernized cities with a great deal of infrastructure, such as New York City, tend to be extremely large and have high population densities. However, cities with less infrastructure, such as Houston, tend to have lower population densities. This was discovered by demographic analysis.

Numerous children are a part of this poverty-stricken family.

On average, women in developed countries tend to have anywhere from 1-2 children, while women in developing countries tend to have anywhere from 3-6 (depending on the country). Again, this was discovered through demographical analysis.

Choose the letter of the sentence in which the word in bold-faced type is used incorrectly.

A) The demographers charted the population growth of Japan and determined that it was negative because most adults do not have the financial resources to support children.

B) After studying the effects of China's One-Child Policy on the nation, the demographers concluded that the policy had dramatically increased the proportion of males to females as well as the number of elderly people, so doing away with such a policy would be judicious.

C) The demographer determined life expectancies of people around the world.

D) Demographers can explain the psychology of the brain and how certain people's behaviors and customs differ from country to country.

The answer is D.

"D" is incorrect because the word is used incorrectly in context. Demographers study population trends, not the psychology of the brain. A better word to put in the blank would be "psychologist".
