Butterflies in Pre-K!
Week of May 9th, 2016
Good afternoon families,
This week we learned about butterflies! In Language Arts we learned the Fl- blend. We thought of Fl- words, read Fly on the Flower and wrote Fl- words in a sentence. We matched blends to ends. For example, Fl- to ag, flag. Students listened to the letter sounds to match the blend to the end. We read a butterfly poem and circled rhyming words. We read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, made our own props then created a video. Check it out: https://youtu.be/Dzc13Y-tlukWe also drew caterpillars in the shape of the letter C and wrote unique sentences about the picture. We drew butterflies and wrote about the colors we used. We wrote in our journals and practiced tracing sight words and reading them in simple sentences.
In Math we created butterfly addition problems. We counted the dots from one side of the butterfly then the other to determine how many dots were in all. We also discussed symmetry. We searched for symmetry then created symmetrical butterflies by painting on one half of a butterfly and pressing the halves together.
In Science we learned about the butterfly life cycle. Students had fun acting it out, drawing it and cutting and pasting it. After reviewing The Very Hungry Caterpillar we discussed healthy eating. Students listed healthy foods from the book and foods that are not healthy. Then we thought about the foods we ate for lunch and added them to the heathy/non-healthy chart.
Congratulations to Saanvi for earning lunch bunch with Mr. Rodia. She was voted most trustworthy!
In addition to all of our academic work, we got to see the new buddy benches, we met the chicks in First grade and Nick's mom visited as a mystery reader! We had so much fun listening to the book and drawing/writing our own post cards!
Next week we will learn about transportation. If you can send me a quick email listing a few places your child has traveled to, that would be great! We will use the information next week. We have Field Day Friday afternoon. It's a dress down day and a change of clothes is recommended as well as a water bottle. Summer camp registration is due today: https://www.smore.com/7bvub-it-feels-like-summer?ref=email
Have a wonderful weekend!
