SLCS District Update
May 11th, 2023
Superintendent's Update
Good evening SLCS Families and Staff Members,
It has been a great week celebrating our teachers and staff members. We say it each year, but it bears repeating- Regardless how large or small one’s role is in the district, we all have the amazing potential to positively impact our students' educational experience on a daily basis. Know that you make a difference, that you are appreciated, and that you make SLCS the special place that it is each and every day. Thank you to all the students, PTO’s and parents who have shown our staff how much they are truly appreciated.
May is one of the busiest and most exciting months of the school year. It is a time when we begin wrapping up one school year and also start preparing for a new one. Staff members, students, and families across the district have the opportunity to experience one or more exciting events including orientation nights, musicals, concerts, and recognition ceremonies just to name a few. Each event offers a meaningful opportunity for our students to demonstrate some of what they have learned throughout the school year and presents well-deserved opportunities to celebrate our students.
In closing, we want to offer a special shoutout to all of our SLCS moms. Thank you for trusting us with your children and we hope you have a great Mother’s Day Weekend!
SLCS Proud!
Steven Archibald
Superintendent
Novi Virtual
Our district has again entered into a cooperative agreement with Novi Community School District for the 2023-24 school year. Novi provides a K-12 virtual option that can be valuable for students who will have extended travel, health needs, or elite level extracurricular activities. Students enrolled in Novi Virtual through our district remain South Lyon students and are eligible for our district’s extra and co-curricular opportunities. If you feel like the Novi Virtual Program may be the best fit for your child or children, please reach out to your school principal. If your child is already enrolled in the program through our district, a staff member will be in touch to discuss next school year.
When to Worry
On Wednesday, May 3, Dr. Heather Schmitt, psychologist at Thriving Minds, presented on the topic of anxiety. The presentation was full of practical takeaways. Dr. Schmitt has agreed to share her presentation slides which can be found by clicking this link.

Health-Tick Identification and Tick-Borne Diseases
As we head into spring and summer, it is important to be on the lookout for ticks. Tick-borne diseases, particularly Lyme disease and anaplasmosis, are increasing across Michigan as the weather warms up. Ticks can be active when the weather is above 40⁰F. This Map of Michigan highlights the counties where there is a known risk of Lyme Disease. Click here to see pictures to identify ticks in our areas
A tick bite may look like a tiny, itchy bump on your skin, much like a mosquito bite. Many people will not notice they've had a tick bite. Not all ticks carry lyme disease so just because you were bitten does not mean you will develop Lyme Disease. However, if you do start experiencing symptoms, it’s important to get treatment as soon as possible.
Early symptoms of Lyme disease usually happen within 3 to 30 days after a tick bite. A rash is a common sign of Lyme disease. But it doesn't always happen. The rash is usually a single circle that slowly spreads from the site of the tick bite. It may become clear in the center and look like a target or bull's-eye. The rash often feels warm to the touch, but it's usually not painful or itchy.
Other symptoms include; fever, headache, extreme tiredness, joint stiffness, muscle aches & pains and swollen lymph nodes. For additional information on the stages of Lyme Disease and Treatments click this link: Lyme Disease information from Mayo Clinic
