Independence is Declared
The Colonies Break Away From Great Britain
A New Government
On July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the 13 colonies broke away from Great Britain. The Continental Congress approved of the new document Thomas Jefferson had written, called the Declaration of Independence. (however, the draft only talked about white men: not any women, Native Americans, or African Americans)The colonies then joined together to form the "United States of America"
Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
Why have we written such a document? We do not need a war, and are better off without it and the document. Now, do not expect my husband to go off and fight in your war against the British when there is not any problems between us and them. The have taken away all of the tax except for the one on tea, so it is not really a problem anymore. Please just forget this document and all of the troubles it may bring. I am advising you in the best interest of our colonies. There is not a need for war.
Sincerely,
Beatrice Smith
