Smoke Signals
Week of September 5-9, 2016
Enjoy your Labor Day!
We have only been back for a few weeks, but this Labor Day holiday has been a much needed break for all of us at the Burkhalter house. I have loved having a chance to unplug, relax and reconnect with family and friends. I hope you have taken the time to do the same. Enjoy a barbecue and get in a last swim or two today before fall weather comes!
Mrs. Harris makes learning fun!
"Mrs Applegate will be flying in from the UK this morning to share her knowledge of proper nouns! Can't wait!" --Mrs. Harris
I love seeing hands on learning in your classrooms! It is fun and helps keep students interested. --TB
Mrs. Harper joins the staff
Mrs. Jamie Harper joined our staff this week. She has several years of experience teaching elementary students in 3 states. She is from Waxahachie and has 3 precious kiddos. Please take a minute to stop by room 205 to introduce yourself!
Learning in action
Mrs. Glass' class took their grammar outside! They played active games like 'parts of speech hopscotch.' Love, love, love seeing kids learning from and with each other.

RTI FAQ
Our first RTI meeting is coming up on Monday, 9/12. A few things to know...
Who will we discuss?
- A student you've already discussed in PLC AND is already on Tier II or Tier III, is struggling, or in need of new interventions.
- Students recommended for Reading Recovery.
- Students in 504 or special education need to be discussed in 504 meetings or ARDs. If a student is in special education and struggling, please see Mrs. Leggett, Mrs. McCleskey, Mrs. Herron or Ms. Burley. If a student is in 504 and struggling, please see Mr. East.
How do I get someone on the list to discuss them?
- Send Mrs. Burkhalter an email with their name by Thursday, 9/8.
- Make sure all tier paperwork is complete in eduphoria before sending the name to Mrs. Burkhalter. Students with blank or incomplete paperwork will not be discussed at the RTI/SST meeting.
Who do I talk to if I have a question about paperwork?
- Mrs. Burkhalter
- While Mrs. Taylor is on the committee and will be helping document the meeting notes, she is not responsible for RTI paperwork. Questions should be directed to Mrs. Burkhalter.
What do I do if I have a student on Tier I who is struggling?
- Make sure you have discussed the student in PLC.
- Ask Mrs. Burkhalter to open a Tier II if the team has decided that the student needs to move up and have additional interventions.
- Complete the Tier II paperwork prior to the RTI/SST meeting.
