The positives and negatives of Immigration
Negative
chinese must go
This political cartoon was made to spread fear and hatred to the Americans. Since the Chinese worked for less Wedges the company owners chose to employ the Chinese for more work hour and less pay.
one barred out
When the Chinese finished working on the railroads, they were forced to leave the country because they couldn't find jobs. The gates of liberty was welcoming for the Europeans, communist, socialist, and nihilist but it barred out the Chinese men.
The steerage class
The steerage class didn't have space for the immigrants to sleep in. Since there is no shade, the immigrants face the burning heat and rain though their journey looking for a better life leaving their loved ones behind.
nativism now and back then
the idea of being native has always been the same. nativism led to the restriction of immigrants. it has always been the same. natives fear that the increase of immigrants might cause the loss of jobs and economy.
the gate of liberty inspection
political cartoons affected the immigrants negatively. This brought fear of immigrants on this particular picture it shows that an immigrant is carrying poverty, disease, and anarchy coming to Uncle Sam.
Positive
we're here! we're here!
this picture was positive because in early 1800's the life in the home countries were much worse than the us. coming to America changed most of these peoples life. They changed their families life by having to work here and send money back home.
The trust
the trust made a lot of money during this time because of the increase in immigration.
The people or a person controlling america?
john d Rockefeller the most powerful of the time. he controlled 95% of the oil in the country. immigration was a positive advantage for rich people like him because they don't have to worry about losing employees.
Child Labor
As disturbing as this sounds child labor was one of the positives that the natives benefited from. Most of the immigrant kids were separated from their families and were willing to do what ever it takes to survive. they worked for hours without enough break, didn't get to go to school or anything a child deserves, they were abused and got low wedges. This meant the company owners could employ kids for less money and more labor. It was a win! lose! situation.
Sherman anti-trust
This act split the money through out the country. The rich couldn't control the money anymore. It prohibited trust . It was named after the senator john Sherman of Ohio in 1890.
