Alpha Pi Chapter - March 2014

Letter from the New Member Educator

All of our chapter’s hard work during recruitment paid off completely when our 42 new members ran down to 4604 College Ave on bid day this year! As New Member Educator, I was ecstatic to get to know our new members and help them with their transition into the chapter. This group of girls is very diverse, hailing from as far north as Connecticut and as south as Florida. They have gotten to know each other and the rest of the Alpha Pi sisters through fun events, such as our new member sleepover and “speed dating!” Many more events are to come, such as a pledge class trip to a UMD men’s basketball game and a frozen yogurt social!

Each new member has been paired with a big sister to help guide her and introduce her to the chapter. These Tridelta families are excited to add the new member to their family scrapbooks and pass down stitched-letter shirts on initiation day!

As the future leaders of this chapter, the new members are very excited to get involved with leadership opportunities and philanthropy. For UMD’s Terp Thon event on March 8th the Tridelta new members, along with their team, have raised almost $15,000 for Children’s National Hospital in D.C.! I am proud to call them our new members and very excited to see what they can accomplish next!

St. Jude Awareness Month

Although throughout the year we try to recognize St. Jude, March is very special to Tri Delta. Because it is St. Jude Awareness Month, every member of the chapter each wrote at least 25 letters to friends and family about all of the wonderful things that St. Jude does and kindly ask for a donation. While normally Alpha Pi raises about $10,000 from Sincerely Yours, this year our goal is to raise $15,000 just from this one event. Across the country, more than 75% of total funds raised by Tri Delta for St. Jude comes from Sincerely Yours. We can't wait to share our final number with you!

"Our philanthropy chairs did a great job of turning Sincerely Yours into a great bonding night for the entire chapter! It was really awesome to see every Tri Delta, including the new members, be in one place all working so hard for St. Jude!" -Tara Frankhauser, Sophomore

"Our chapter has had such great morale throughout this school year when it comes to philanthropy events, and the amazing turnout last night (probably the best in the past couple years) proved that we are still keeping the excitement and passion for St. Jude going this semester!" -Meaghan Smith, Senior

"Not only was the love for St. Jude palpable, but the event was the most organized Sincerely Yours yet! With coffee, popcorn, candy bags, the movie "Frozen," and organized folders containing all of our individual supplies- the event went so smoothly!" - Kathryn Flinchbaugh, Senior

Delta Love Week

Our wonderful Vice President of Chapter Development, Tara, has everyone excited for Delta Love Week! Starting this coming week, the entire chapter puts particular effort into being thankful for each other and loving the chapter. On Monday, each member is writing a personalized letter to another member of the chapter. For Tuesday, we are all putting Post-it notes on the inside of the front door to share what we love about Tri Delta or share a note with a sister. Wednesday gives seniors the opportunity to share their favorite Tri Delta memory and the newest pledge class will share what they are most looking forward to about Tri Delta. On Thursday, each member is decorating a puzzle piece with words and pictures of why we love Tri Delta. We wrap up Delta Love Week with Rita's and assembling the puzzle!

We're so lucky to have such a wonderful VPCD to lead the chapter through this exciting time.

Stella and Dot

Every semester, Tri Delta hosts a Stella and Dot representative at the chapter house to purchase jewelry and accessories. Stella and Dot event gives 10% of the proceeds to St. Jude! Last semester, many of the women bought jewelry to wear to Bids for Kids, and this semester it is even easier! Stella and Dot is hosting an virtual shopping trip. To participate, all you have to do is click this link http://www.stelladot.com/ts/6k1w5. We hope you enjoy all the beautiful jewelry that Stella and Dot provides while also supporting St. Jude!

Terp Thon

The University of Maryland's Terp Thon is a great way for Tri Delta to get involved with the Maryland community. Each penny donated to Terp Thon goes towards the Children's National Medical Center in Washington D.C. On March 8th, members of Tri Delta and University of Maryland students will stand on their feet for 12 hours in honor of the children and their families at the Medical Center. Tri Delta's original goal was $10,000, and we have far exceeded that and are so close to reaching our new goal of $20,000! Our new members have made us very proud by raising most of the money for this cause. We're lucky they already understand the importance of donating to those in need!
