KAGAN INFO FROM THE KAGAN CCC
Kagan Structure: Sage & Scribe
Partners take turns being the Sage and Scribe. Useful for learning steps, procedures and step-by-step directions.
"Sage-N-Scribe allows guided practice before individual practice. This ensures learners are successful during independent work." Spencer Kagan
Directions:
In pairs, one person is the Sage and one is the Scribe (they will switch for each new problem). Use paper or a technology you can write/type on.
1. The Sage gives the Scribe step-by-Step instructions how to perform a task or solve a problem.
2. The Scribe records the Sage's solution step-by-step in writing/typing, coaching if necessary.
3. The Scribe praises the Sage.
4. Switch roles for the next problem or task.
Tips:
Stress that the Scribe can't move forward ahead of the Sage. Also talk about how to fix mistakes as they come across them. I encourage my kids to not say "You're Wrong" and instead say "We should look at the problem again". If they are having a hard time staying focused on the current problem, have them fold the paper in half so that the scribe can't see the problems that they will work out.
Classroom Ideas:
Kindergarten: Sage and scribe could be used to practice OG. The teacher calls out a word (example: flap). The sage talks the scribe through tapping out the blend, medial vowel, and final consonant. Then, the scribe writes the word.
1st Grade: Sage and Scribe could be used in 1st grade to teach place value. Have the sage say a number (example: 35), and they talk the scribe through making it (example: 3 big kids and 5 little kids).
2nd/3rd Grade: Math – use it to solve addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division problems where the sage has to describe the strategy and how to work it out to the scribe; OG – use it for dictation where the teacher gives the word/phrase/sentence and the sage tells the scribe how to spell it
