Newsletter Week 9 Term 2

Huirangi Primary School, 28th June 2021

Kia Ora Koutou, Hello Everyone!

Having been absent from school for part of last week with laryngitis, I became truly aware of what a caring community I am part of at Huirangi School. The teachers and support staff held the fort and ran a tight ship while I was away, and the messages of well wishes was greatly appreciated.

It has been awesome to see the kids actively involved in different sports over the past few weeks. Part of my long term goals as Principal is to see the Huirangi children as participants in active learning to enhance their physical, and more importantly, their mental wellbeing. There has been a big emphasis on mental health in children in the media of late, and the Ministry of Education are also looking at ways schools can involve children in more activities that support the improvement of this as a nation. The New Plymouth Principals' Association in conjunction with Sport Taranaki will offer a variety of new sports and activities over the following two terms (aimed at our senior students), to just get out there, have fun and give it a go! It is a positive shift from just having the likes of rugby and netball available for kids to play.

Below is attached information about how to order a school hoodie. These are not compulsory, or intended to be a school uniform. As a Mum myself, I know I prefer less washing and less lost property!

Kia pai to wiki (have a great week)!

Ngā mihi nui,

Natalie Looney

Huirangi School Hoodie

After weeks of consultation, I can finally present our School Hoodie. The design process has been a long one as I wanted to make sure it was the right fit for us. The artist from Game Changer has included our school colours, school logo and our turangawaewae - Kairau Marae and the Waitara River. The manaia in the middle of the artwork represents our School Values (Respect, Accountability, Family and Whānau and Thinkers), and also the wider community watching down on our school, keeping us safe. This artwork is uniquely ours.

When ordering your hoodie, you don't have to have a name printed on the back. That decision is completely yours. It does make on selling the hoodie once your child has outgrown it (if you wish to) easier. Adult sizes are also available.

Please click on the link to order. Note: if you do an instore pick-up, delivery is free. Laybuy and Afterpay options are also available.

Thank you to you all for promptly booking in times for our 3 Way Conferences in Week 10.

Year 5/6 Squash Festival

Four of our students attended the Squash Festival hosted by the Waitara Squash Club on Tuesday 22nd. Emma Lane, Sienna Caldwell, Marcus Sheehy and Maddeline Pearce had an hour long session which they thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks to Mel Lane for transport and supervision, and the pictures!

Waitara School's Rippa Tournament

A wonderful day was held at Clifton Park last week for the Waitara School's Rippa Tournament. Both of our Social and Competitive Teams played well, and were commended on their fair play and resilient attitudes. It was great to have Huirangi enter two teams into this tournament, and I am sure the kids will be back out there again even stronger in 2022!

Thanks to all of the parents who provided transport, and to Greg Jupp and Trish George for stepping up to help coach the teams.
