Year End Report 2014-15
The Valley High School Library Mission
To engage students in a lifelong love of reading.
To provide a library collection that reflects the diversity in our school, community and world.
To provide print and non-print materials that support school curriculum, national, state and district standards.
To provide access to technology and information beyond the school building.
To teach information literacy and help students develop skills to find, evaluate and use a variety of resources.
To collaborate with teachers, school staff and parents to meet the educational needs of all students.
2,505 library books were checked out this year by students.
We purchased 133 new library books, 5 audio books, and 3 instructional videos. Grants from community organizations brought in 20 more books. The “Lit Circle” book shelf was expanded; small sets of books are available group work. Audio books can be checked out by students. The library went from zero magazine subscriptions to 3 magazine subscriptions. Due to donations, we were able to give out 735 free books to students.
231 classes used the library computer labs
The library teacher collaborated with teachers to develop, plan and teach skills for class projects and research. The 74 lessons taught by the library teacher included:
- using academic databases;
- effective web searches;
- evaluating websites;
- citing sources;
- creating annotated bibliographies;
- organizing a research project;
- developing a research question;
- avoiding plagiarism
Information Literacy and new Technologies
The library teacher offered afterschool workshops for teachers for district credit.
VHS Library manages the five new carts of Chromebooks. The library teacher offered a cart orientation to 36 teachers and helped 7 teachers do SBAC testing orientations and/or Chromebook orientations with their classes.
Other Statistics for the 2014-15 school year
- Library open hours were increased due to the addition of a library technician. This allowed student more access before school, after school during lunch every day
- About 30,000 textbooks and core novels are stored, inventoried & repaired in the library.
- Over 10,000 textbooks and core novels were circulated during the school year.
The library teacher offered instruction for English classes including:
- how to find fiction books in the library;
- book talks on teen novels;
- identifying literature genres;
- discussing banned or challenged books.
School and District Involvement
The library teacher manages the school webpage to update events, showcase school achievements, create links to resources and provide help to teachers and organizations who want to expand their web presence. Two teachers and three VHS club representatives this year came to the library to learn how to create pages for their instruction or clubs.
The library teacher is on several district committees: Library Steering Committee; District Database subcommittee; and Library Teachers Professional Learning Network.
Community Involvement
The library provided space and equipment for several Career Center college and scholarship workshops, three Strategies Fairs, an author visit, district workshops and a holocaust survivor presentation, as well as meetings of staff and clubs.
Collaborations between VHS and Valley Hi Public libraries have resulted in increased student participation in Sacramento Public Library (SPL) after school and summertime programs and access to class sets of SPL e-cards, allowing our students access to SPL databases.
