Got Anxiety?
Dear Parents,
We are fortunate to live in a school district that highly values professional development. In mid-February, our professional staff attended a staff development day which offered a wide variety of training opportunities to benefit our students. The keynote speaker for the day, Dr. Katherine Dahlsgaard, lead psychologist of the Anxiety Behaviors Clinic, spoke on the topic of anxiety and children. Her presentation made me take pause as I learned of how prominent anxiety in children is today.
What is anxiety?
Healthy anxiety
- Motivating
- Fluctuates in response to stress
- Mild – enhances performance
Excessive anxiety
- Persists over an extended period of time
- Does not fluctuate as a response – is more chronic
- Interferes with performance
In subsequent issues of the Gayman Gazette, Ms. Vass and I will be featuring additional information about anxiety and children. We will provide strategies for parents in helping children learn to navigate through anxiety in a healthy way. Your job as a parent is NOT to rescue or prevent your child from feeling distress. Your job is to model, teach, and support your child with active coping skills. Your reaction to your child’s response to stress is what he/she sees first.
I hope you find these resources helpful and that you consider adding them to your parenting toolbox.
Sincerely,
Mike Testani & Suzanne Vass

Operation Helping Hand - Giving Kids The Food They Need To Succeed
More than 20,000 children in Bucks County are "food insecure". That means they don't know when - or if - they will get their next meal. Hungry kids often have health issues and struggle to do well in school. Luckily, you can help! Operation Helping Hand, United Way of Bucks County's annual one day food drive for schools, is March 8, 2017. When you send your child to school with a nonperishable food item on Wednesday, March 8th, you are fighting hunger in Bucks County and helping a child like yours succeed in school and beyond.

Home & School Board Nominations
The GHSA Executive Board elections are fast approaching, and tenure will be drawing to a close for some of our board members. The Executive Board is an integral part of our school community. All community members who have an interest being part of this integral team are encouraged to join! Position descriptions can be found on the GHSA website.
Board Members enrich the experiences of Gayman students with the many events they organize throughout the course of the school year. Soon the Executive Board will ask for volunteers to serve on the Nominating Committee. If you are interested in becoming an Officer, you cannot serve on the Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee will present a list of candidates to be voted upon at the general membership meeting in May.
Become involved with your child’s school and make an impact on their future! Additional information will be included in future issues of the Gayman Gazette with regard to the election process and deadlines.

This year, Gayman will continue to accept nominations for the Boomerang Award, which is our way of honoring students who best demonstrate their own developmental assets. What are Developmental Assets? Students possessing a combination of “40 Assets” are typically most successful in school and in life. These assets have the power to influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible adults. For a complete listing of the 40 Developmental Assets visit: www.
