Another great week learning about 6th grade and getting into our first unit, Childhood.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What are some of the challenges and triumphs of growing up?
We had a class discussion about the question, Is competition good for kids, why or why not? We shared examples and reflected on our own personal experiences in our Writer’s notebook. We also began determining the meaning of our academic vocabulary words; reflect, notable, contribute, recognize, and memorize.
Social Studies with Mr. Johnsen
Sixth grade students are learning how social scientists are like detectives and learn about the past when so much of the evidence has been destroyed. We are focusing on cave paintings and what they tell social scientists about the times they are from.
Science with Mrs. Perry
What caused the channel on Mars? Was it formed by water, lava, or something else? We will be gathering evidence about the surface of Mars to help us answer these questions. We will then compare what we learned about Mars to landforms on Venus.

This past week, we started using our Reading program called Achieve 3000. Students took their LevelSet assessment to see where their Lexile currently is, and now the articles will be pushed out at their level. I am excited to see their Lexile reading level climb throughout the year! Next week, we are going to continue reading some articles on roller coasters. We are going to review synonyms and antonyms and how to determine the meaning of unknown words using context clues. It’s going to be a great week!
