The Danger of a Single Story
Last week I attended a workshop about developing culturally and linguistically responsive schools. Cristina Sanchez-Lopez, a well respected American educational specialist, opened the day by sharing a powerful Ted talk by Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie.
Adichie shares a powerful message warning of the dangers of hearing only a single story about another person or country. I have listened to this Ted talk many times but this particular exposure led me to think about how we, as educators, ensure culturally and linguistically responsive learning experiences for our students. Do we incorporate students' cultural knowledge and prior experiences in order to make learning more relevant? Do we focus on students' strengths as a starting point for academic progress?
I encourage you all to sit down with a cup of coffee (or drink of choice) and enjoy listening to Adichie's story. She's a talented story teller and it will be 17 minutes you won't regret. As always, I'd love to hear your thoughts.
