Surface and Subsurface Mining

The environmental impacts of both types of mining

Strip Mining

Strip Mining is where the top layer of the Earth's surface is mined. Strip mining destroys headwater streams at the top of mountains.

Mountain Top Removal

Mountain Top Removal is where the peak of a mountain is steamed then they explode it. When the top of the mountain is exploded it takes away from all of the rivers and wildlife on it.

Drift Mining

Drift Mining is where you go into the side of a mountain and extract all of the minerals out of it. It hurts the environment because it disturbs all of the wildlife.

Fracking is drilling down into the Earth with high pressure water and gas. It releases drinking water and gas into the Earth witch hurts the environment.
