Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion Families,

I hope everyone is doing well! The Trunk or Treat 2022 event was very fun and we want to thank everyone for participating! A big shout out to Jose Luna and Mari Abundiz(and all the volunteers)for organizing this memorable event! Many of our teachers were taking advantage of this time of year by having students compare and contrast the traditions of Halloween and Día de los Muertos. Altars and Ofrendas were seen in most classrooms and hallways as students learned about Día de los Muertos. A lot of comparative language and vocabulary can be learned comparing these two traditions, and of course the students are very engaged.

I want to thank Librarian Armando Ramirez, and The Friends of the Redwood City Public Library, for a wonderful Día de los Muertos presentation in our Library(see the photos below)! Armando explained some of the Día de los Muertos traditions from Mexico, shared some artifacts from his altar, read a story aloud, and shared this beautiful recording of La Llorona by 11 year old Sofia Meneses.

I want to thank everyone for coming to the Día de Los Muertos 2022 event that was very successful in bringing our community together. Thanks to all of the parent volunteers and Jose Luna for really showing up and allowing our students to have a memorable experience--altars tours, face painting, arts and crafts, yummy Mexican food, and entertainment. Thanks for the amazing performances from Danny G's Dance Groups, as well as the "Shipoopi Dance" which is one of the scenes for the upcoming School Play 'The Music Man", and for the "Danza Colibri" Bailes Fólcloricos. A special shout out to Event Chairs: Kelly Coyne and Veronica Gutierrez for everything-- Great Job!

Believe it or not, we are coming to the end of the first Trimester and teachers are finishing up assessments and currently working on completing the Report Cards/Progress Reports which will be sent home on November 17th. Our teachers will schedule a conference with you either online via Google Meet /Zoom or in person here at school in the classroom depending on the parents needs/preferences. For the Fall Conferences, we strive to meet with every student's parents/guardians. Parent Teacher conferences will be on Monday and Tuesday November 21-22nd(keep in mind there is no school those days).

New TK/Kindergarten Registration 2023/23 and Tours

The School District Enrollment and School of Choice for 2023/24 TK/Kindergarten opened on November 4th and continues through Friday, January 13th at 3:00pm. It is important that both the Registration/Enrollment Form for your home school(based on your address) and the School of Choice Form for Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion must be completed by January 13th. Current PreSchool students here on our campus with Maestra Aida or Maestra Yulizma and TK students with Maestra Jennifer will have priority acceptance as long as the forms are completed on time. Furthermore, siblings of students who are currently enrolled here and at Kennedy in the Spanish immersion strand also have priority for acceptance if the forms are completed by January 13th. Please complete this Adelante Selby Sibling 2023/24 Form so we can alert the District to prioritize your acceptance for next year.

Please help get the word out to family, friends, and neighbors about our weekly informational TK/Kindergarten Tours that meet in person at the school office every Thursday at 8:40AM and the tours will continue through the end of January. Please register for a TK/Kindergarten Tour with this form: TK/Kindergarten Tour Registration. Promoting our school by "word of mouth" from parents and community members is the best way to "market" our school and immersion program to prospective new parents. When promoting our school, keep in mind that mastering two or more languages has enormous benefits for our students, both native speakers of English and native speakers of the target language(Spanish) at a dual language immersion school. Other talking points when talking about our school are that research has confirmed the benefits of biliteracy and bilingualism that are demonstrated as brain and cognitive functioning, academic, economic, and social advantages, as well as cross-cultural competency and supporting a stronger family cohesion and connection to their family heritage.

Walk-A-Thon November 18: ¡VAMOS ALEBRIJES!

The Adelante Selby Walk-A-Thon is a fundraiser that supports Art, Garden, STEAM, and Dance for all students! Students ask for flat donations to support our school programs.

How the Walk-A-Thon works:

  • Students solicit donations from family and friends
  • Each child is given a paper donation form for cash donations and a website for online donations
  • Paper forms will be sent home in children’s folders (please return to your child’s teacher or the front office with cash/checks attached)
  • Online donations can be made through 99pledges. Just search for your child’s first name and donate through their individual webpages.
  • The Walk-A-Thon is a fun event for all students and will take place during the school day on November 18th.

What to plan for this year:

  • Parents are allowed on campus this year so join in the fun with your student on November 18th and be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities
  • Every child will receive a 2022 Walk-A-Thon t-shirt for free!
  • The class with the highest percentage of students receiving donations will earn a pizza party!

Questions? Please contact Ann Hynecek, walkathon@unidospto.org.

Scholastic Book Fair!!

Thank you to all the students, parents, and staff who visited the Scholastic Book Fair! We sold just over $17,000 in books - a new school record! Adelante Selby receives 50% of those profits as Scholastic rewards, which we use to purchase books for classrooms and the library, Let's Find Out magazines for lower grades, and other items like classroom furniture for teachers.

A Big Shout Out and "Muchas Gracias" to our Book Fair Chairs, Erlina Henderwan and Cynthia Alvidrez, for all of their hard work on the Fair, to Susan Forker, and to all of the parent volunteers who came to help last week - THANK YOU!

From Maestro Ignacio "Little Cocineros" Project: Do You Want To Learn How To Cook Typical Spanish Dishes?

Hello Adelante Selby Community: We, the fifth grade students, know that culture is part of the process of learning a language. With this premise, we are participating in a project for the exchange of culinary recipes with schools in Spain. Each month we will upload two new recipes. One will be done by our students and the other will be done by students from Spain.

Cheer up and cook with us. It is also a fun activity to do as a family.

Enjoy.

Music Man Musical

Buy your tickets today to Adelante Selby Spanish immersion School's performance of The Music Man and come watch your fellow Alebrijes on stage! There's trouble in River City when a fast-talking salesman gets his heart stolen by the town librarian in this adaptation of the Tony award-winning Broadway classic. Master showman Harold Hill is in town and he's got "seventy-six trombones" in tow. Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure? The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boy's band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cask are foiled when he falls for Marian, whose belief in Harold's power just might help him succeed in the end in spite of himself.

Location: McKinley Theater, 400 Duane Street, Redwood City, CA

Child Nutrition Services: November Breakfast and Lunch Menus

A healthy body fosters a healthy and focused mind. Well-rounded meals served in RCSD school cafeterias are created using USDA nutrition guidelines as well as “kid-approved” recipes. Whole grains, milk, fresh produce, protein, and healthy fats containing Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are the stars of the breakfast and lunch menu items. Studies show that good eating habits and healthy behaviors are connected to academic achievement. Meals provided by Child Nutrition Services help to shape lifelong healthy habits. All students have the opportunity to eat breakfast and lunch for free again this year through our Child Nutrition Services.

Here are the menus for October:
