You Did It Brookside!
Engineering is Elementary
Students in Mrs. Eliason's Media class have concluded their Simple Machines/Engineering unit. Kindergarteners used blocks to create simple structures and design cars and bridges. Second grade students followed a blueprint to design and modify complex designs, like helicopters and tow trucks. Third graders learned to use pieces like hinges and axles to make designs that move and spin. Fourth graders focused on a simple machine called a lever. They learned about three classes of levers and how they are useful in everyday life. Fifth graders built inclined planes and used them to learn about mechanical advantage. (First graders will work on this unit in the spring since they are currently learning about nonfiction books.)
Brookside's weather eye
Mr. Adkins’ fifth-grade class engages in everyday, basic subjects─English, math, reading, etc.─but Mr Adkins also believes in teaching another not-so-everyday activity: monitoring the weather! His students record the weather daily, noting the temperature, wind direction and speed, barometer, and many other atmospheric conditions. This is accomplished because Brookside is fortunate enough to have its very own mini rooftop weather-recording station. Part of it, the orange flag-like object, is visible on the roof on the playground side of the building. It helps generate the weather data 5-A documents and shares every day. Mr. Adkins’ class hopes to achieve their goal of becoming junior meteorologists able to predict weather by the end of the year!
2020-2021 Pre-registration Has Opened
The Westwood Regional School District has opened online Kindergarten registration for the 2020‑2021 school year. This is a pre-registration only; students will not be considered enrolled until parents/guardians submit the required documentation at an in-person registration appointment at a later date.
Be aware that your child must reside in the Borough of Westwood or Township of Washington and be five (5) years old on or before October 1, 2020, to enter Kindergarten next September. For more information, click here.
Calling all artists!
WWRSD has heART is the district’s annual art charity event. Using our children's artistic talents and creativity, we are able to help others in need. Fourteen finalists will be selected from district schools, and prints and notecards of the winning images will be sold for charity and displayed at the Westwood Gallery in downtown Westwood. For rules and an entry form, click here!
Please note that artwork must be submitted on or before Thursday, December 19.
