Sixth Grade Newsletter
September 16, 2018
Dear Parents,
Here's what's happening at school this week.
English
There will be a quiz on Friday over grammar and vocabulary. Students did well on last week's quiz; you can see the results in Powerschool.
Enrichment writing is planned for Tuesday and Thursday this week unless we have to change our schedule for testing purposes.
Check out our class blog at rayder6.edublogs.org. Students will take turns writing about events at school.
Math
This week in math, students continued with “Metric Moments” each day. Normally, students work on the metric system later in the school year. In an effort to improve their understanding, we will be working on this throughout the school year. Students also practiced finding the Least Common Multiple and the Greatest Common Factor. They had 3 assignments: Page 21(2-9) & Page 22(1-6); Page 27(2-11) and Page 28(1-6); Page 33(2-4) and Page 34(1-6). These assignments are due on Monday, September 17th.
Next week, students will have a quiz on Monday over what we have worked on so far this year (Division, Prime Factorization, Least Common Multiple, Greatest Common Factor). Also, they will plan on taking the NWEA Fall math test this week. Afterwards, students will be practicing addition and subtraction of decimals.
Enrichment Math
This week, students had the opportunity to learn about integers. We discussed the rules for multiplication and division of integers. They also practiced simplifying expressions with integers. Finally, students learned about the relationship between positive and negative exponents. Next week, we will spend some more time with integers.
Social Studies
Science
Students have been reviewing the Scientific Method Steps through various experiments. Last week we worked on giving detailed procedures and observations.
We started a Science Concepts Rotation Lab last week and will finish up this lab the first half of this week. The students worked in groups to complete six stations that focused on: Scientific Method, liquid and solid measurement, reading and interpreting data, and predicting outcomes. The students are doing a great job working though the stations and are quickly picking up on concepts and equipment that is new to them. This lab also focuses on students working together as a group as well as reading and following written instructions.
This lab will be due Wednesday 9-19-18. We will then move into: What do all living things have in common? What do all living things need to live? What is the smallest unit of a living thing.
