History of Buddhism

The religion Buddhism started 2,500 years ago when eight hairs were

brought from buddha’s head, and are still treasured today. Buddha

wasn’t always called Buddha. His name was Siddhartha Gautama, and he

was a prince in a kingdom near the present day border of India and Nepal.

His followers then started to call him Buddha, Which means

Enlightened One. When the people started the buddhism

they started worshiping Meditation. After the Buddhism

religion became a bigger thing in india it began to spread

to Nepal, Tibet, and China.

What it means to be buddhist

There are a lot of things that show what it means to be buddhist, but some are more important than others. One thing it means to be buddhist is to meditate. committed monks will meditate for hours a day. others may not meditate at all so it really depends on what you are in the religion. If you are a buddhist you will often end your suffering by cutting out greed, hatred, and ignorance.

The moon

The moon is one of the most important things for buddhists. They Will celebrate the moon when it is new, full or at half moon. Buddhists celebrate the full moon when it is the day of Wesak. Their year follows the moon's cycle and not the sun. This is called the lunar year. Their festivals often happen on the full moon. Important Celebration: Wesak

Wesak is the name of a month when Theravada Buddhists celebrate the birth, the teaching of and death of Buddha. Buddhists believe that all of these happen in Wesak. Wesak is in late may or early june. They chant and meditate for long periods of time. Lots of candles are lit at this time.

Important celebration: New year's and new year's eve

New years- New years eve is actually more important than New year's day. They have evening ceremonies where at midnight they ring bells 108 times. They believe that when the new years comes it is a fresh start for them.
