Week 1: Getting Started

North Carolina Virtual Public Schools, Mrs. Melissa Partin

I've logged in....what now?

So, this week, you will be working to acquire your user and password from your school counselor or the staff member who will be supervising your work on campus. Once you get that information, you will log on to begin work in Canvas via https://ncvps.instructure.com.

Once you are online, click "Courses" at the top of the page and select the Physical Science course. Now, you will access the Getting Started Module either by scrolling all the way down on that home page OR by clicking "Modules" and selecting the Getting Started Module. Here is a tutorial video to help you navigate the beginning of this journey...

You've talked about deadlines....how do I know what my deadlines are?

Each week, I will be sending out a newsletter like this one that will also have a pacing guide attached to it (see below). You are always allowed to work ahead of the pacing guide, but you really should not fall behind it. It is important that you stay on pace in the course. I have always noticed that students that stay on pace are significantly less stressed and find the course more enjoyable.

Please note that you will be expected to move from beginning to end through a module and complete EVERY assignment before the next module will open up for you to work. If you are getting communication from me that states you should be working in another module past the one you are viewing and you are not able to view that module, it may be because you have not completed assignments in previous modules.

You told me that I should be receiving announcements each day to my email account...why haven't I?

If you are not receiving your announcements to your email account each day, as a student, then this may mean that your email address is not correctly listed in Canvas. Watch the below tutorial video on how to add or change the email account listed.

What if the course says I am supposed to be able to view a video or content and I cannot see it?

If you are having a difficult time viewing content within the course, you may need to "Enable Mixed Content." You can click on the Quick Link called "Enabling Mixed Content" in the course to get these instructions, or click the videos below for further instructions.

What if I've followed all instructions and tutorials in your first newsletter and this one and I am still having technology issues?

If you need additional technology help beyond what is offered in the Getting Started Unit, my two newsletters, and what your school's technology department can offer, please always feel free to fill out a help desk ticket at the NCVPS Help Desk.

About Mrs. Partin

I am a Nationally Board Certified Science Teacher with 9 years of teaching experience in North Carolina. I am an instructor for North Carolina Virtual Public Schools and teach students across multiple classes of Physical Science. I am also a wife to my husband of 11 years and a mother to 3 children ages 8, 5, and 4 as well as a foster mother. In my free time, I enjoy traveling, serving our church in the areas of missions, as Co-Director for the Upward Basketball program, and on the music ministry, spending time with my family, reading, playing my flute, and running. I look forward to getting to know each of my students as they learn Physical Science in a fun, new way! Let me know what interests we share or that you enjoy!
