BARKSDALE ELEMENTARY
May 10, 2018
note from the principal
The third, fourth and fifth graders are getting ready to take the STAAR next week. I would not be truthful if I said that the teachers and I are not a little stressed during this time of year. We are mainly stressed because we want everything to go well for your child(ren). We want them to walk away feeling good about themselves, knowing that they have shown off all that they know.
Stress for us is okay, because, as adults we know how to manage our stress. We do everything in our power to keep students from feeling stressed.
Students are prepared because the teachers have worked hard to teach them everything they need to know. Now is when we remind them to show off everything they know, and when we build their confidence, so they can go into testing with a positive attitude. I encourage you to do the same at home.
Working together as a team, we will give our students the ability to shine! Thank you for helping our students walk in on testing days with the confidence to do well on the state assessments.
Just a reminder that next week we will be closed to visitors and volunteers. Please do not make any appointments during STAAR week.

May 25th is fast approaching! Our favorite day of the year, FIELD DAY! We are so excited! This will be my 28th one and I am just as excited for the 28th as I was for the 1st. It’s what we love, and seeing it through the kids' eyes is always a great time full of great memories!
A HUGE shout out to ALL who have signed up to volunteer! We have 226 volunteer positions and EVERY spot has been filled. Thank you is not enough! We have an incredible community of parents, students, and staff.
Here are a few things to remember for Field Day:
- T-shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes with socks are the BEST option for the day. The students CAN wear a swimsuit under their field day shirt, but will NOT be able to take the shirt off. A change of clothes for those attending day care after school might be a good option.
- SUNSCREEN-We are outside MOST of the day. Hats are also an option.
- The morning kicks off with a flag run and opening ceremony at 8:15am. You can come watch if you want. It's so cool to see all of the grade level flags.
- HYDRATE well the day before (both students and volunteers). Our weather has turned warm quickly this year. Staying hydrated will make this day better for all. Carrying a water bottle is also a great idea. LABEL EVERYTHING!
- Parking is NOT allowed in the back parking lot, so please plan ahead to walk, or to park at church if you are a volunteer.
- Morning volunteers will meet in the gym by 7:45am. Afternoon volunteers will meet in the gym by 11:45am. If you are an ALL day volunteer and know your afternoon station, you can go straight there if you let Coach Kool know.
- Field Day t-shirts will be delivered to your student at school. Wait to wear them on field day. If you did not purchase a shirt for your student, have your student wear her/his grade level color. (K-orange/1st-yellow/2nd-royal blue/3rd-purple/4th-red/5th-lime green)
- If a make-up day is required because of weather, we will have a modified schedule on Tuesday, May 29th.
We are very excited about this great day! Thank you in advance for having your child prepared and also for the many who have volunteered! Any questions can be directed to me at Cheryl.kool@pisd.edu

Huffman Elementary School Enters Second Year of IB Candidacy
Now is the time to join the Huffman community of learners as the school enters its second year of IB candidacy, with an expected authorization for the 2019-2020 school year. As the first elementary academy in Plano ISD, there is much to celebrate. The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is a learning experience that integrates multiple subject areas into a student-centered inquiry environment. Students join with highly trained teachers to create a community of learners in which everyone has ownership and participates in the learning process. PYP concepts and skills reach beyond required learning to incorporate character development and the type of global focus that leads students to a greater understanding of an increasingly complex world. Plano ISD invites you to consider Huffman Elementary for your child’s academic needs. Please contact PYP Coordinator Amy Moore at amy.moore@pisd.edu or Principal Jamey Allen at jamey.allen@pisd.edu if you would like to schedule a tour or obtain more information. For information on transfers, visit www.pisd.edu/pisdtransfer. Transfers are being accepted until June 15 or as long as space is available. Read more at www.pisd.edu/huffmanpyp.
