Counselors' Update

ISA, September, 2020

Dear Families,

Thank you for taking the time to read the ISA Counselors' Update! We realize the start of this school year has been anything but normal, but we are so glad to reconnect with you and your students!

Please see below for some resources regarding National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and also information on our upcoming Coffee with the Counselors.

If you or your student need to schedule an appointment with a counselor, NEISD has created a new Contact a Counselor button that you can access here or on the ISA Student Bulletin. And as always, you can email or call us to schedule a meeting.

We look forward to working with together this year!

Best regards,

ISA Counseling Department

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month

Did you know that suicide is the second leading cause of death among 10-34 year olds, and nearly 800,000 people die due to suicide every year? These numbers are staggering. What we do know is that talking openly helps. Talking about suicide and asking direct questions about intent (plan to commit suicide) and ideation (thoughts of committing suicide) do not increase the risk of suicide. September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. We encourage you to look over the resources below provided by Clarity Child Guidance Center and have a conversation with your family about what this means to them.

How to Talk to with Your Child About Suicide After the Death of a Peer

If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, help is available. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers both a 24/7 hotline (1-800-273-TALK) and a chat option. Your Professional School Counselor can also provide you with community support referrals if needed. We encourage you to share this information with family and friends and via social media.

If you are interested in getting involved with the movement to help spread awareness and prevent suicide, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Out of the Darkness community walks are great places to start.

Coffee with the Counselors

BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee) and bring your questions! Mrs. Miller and Ms. Feldman would like to invite parents and guardians to join us for a virtual Coffee with the Counselors on the morning on October 1st at 9:15AM. We will share some tips on navigating Zoom and Google Classroom, but the meeting will primarily be an open format for your questions!
