The Buzz

Ms. Larrabee's 1st Grade Class

The Buzz This Week (2/16 - 2/19)

Social/ Emotional: We learned how to treat school supplies and materials with respect last week. We're going to continue learning through practice and projects about respect. We'll focus on where and how we show respect, whom we should show respect to (including ourselves) and what respect sounds like.

Writing: Last week we reflected on our first "How-To" books and gave each other feedback to help us improve as non-fiction writers with our new "How-To" chapter books. This week the students will write their table of contents and begin writing their chapters as we discuss writing with details, thinking about questions their readers may ask and writing with comparisons and twin sentences to add more descriptive details.

Reading: We have a couple more weeks left of our poetry unit! We'll be reading a variety of poems as we discuss what we notice (rhyming words, what was visualized, similes, alliterations, feelings evoked, etc.). We'll continue to learn about similes and write our own similes as well. Lastly, we'll begin writing our own poems starting with the cinquain poem.

Word Work: Our studies in vocabulary will be with the long vowel 'a' patterns 'ai" and 'ay' in words such as pain and say. The new sight words we'll be practicing include: no, could, people, water, call.

Science: This is our last week for our Patterns in the Sky unit. We'll start the week by learning about stars and constellations and we'll end the week learning about how clouds form and the different types of cloud formations. We'll also attend our Makerspace.

Math: We're continuing to steadily learn and practice different addition strategies with two digit numbers to 100. Several students are more thoughtfully choosing efficient strategies and are able to articulate their thought processes as well!

Last Week...

(2/8 - 2/11)

I was able to meet with our technology specialist last week and I am now able to upload pictures to our newsletter once again! Pictures that are posted to this newsletter are from the past couple of weeks for you to enjoy and see what special learning events, projects and activities we've been taking a part of!

We earned three Pawfect Awards last week. One from Mrs. Ems in library, one from Mrs. Ehrlich in wellness and one from our Teaching Assistants for good behavior in the cafeteria. We now have 32 Pawfect Awards!

We were immersed in the Chinese culture as we learned about the Chinese New Year last week. We learned about the holiday by watching a short educational video, discussing the types of food that's enjoyed, looking at pictures of people celebrating the holiday and reading about the Chinese calendar. This year was the year of the monkey.

We finished learning about the moon with a couple of fun educational experiences. First, we made mini moons out of ping pong balls and revolved around the sun (a lamp) to see the different moon phases first hand. We also finished off the week by making and explaining the different moon phases out of Oreo cookies. Lastly, we learned a "moon phase" rap that the kids enjoyed singing!

Ms. Gatcombe conducted her February guidance lesson last Tuesday. She taught the kids several ways to calm down when they're upset, feel like their body is out of control or to help them be the best focused learner they can be. She also read a story about how your brain works to calm down and learn.

Thank you for helping make our Valentines Day party a success! Each student brought special valentines for their peers. They had a blast passing out their valentines as well as looking at the valentines their friends delivered to them! We also celebrated the holiday with special treats, an adorable craft and a festive BINGO game! I appreciate all of your support with this special holiday party!

Last, we started a more challenging math App, Front Row. The students were provided with a special note to take home for your information. This note provides directions to use this App or website to continue practicing math at their level at home.
