Falcon Flash
October 13, 2022
Dear Falcon Friends and Families,
The highlight of the week was definitely our FUN RUN! Each and every Falcon participated in running laps around our primary playground just for fun. I personally love the fact that this is not a fundraiser and kids can just enjoy the experience and maybe compete against themselves. I heard many students claim they “broke their record” from the previous year. A BIG THANKS goes out to Melinda McDonald and our incredible PTO for organizing this annual event!
Speaking of traditions, we are bringing back a popular Forest Hills happening! This October 31st (Halloween) all K-5 students are invited to participate in our Costume Parade. This will take place during the afternoon beginning at 2:05 PM on our primary playground. Students may bring their costumes to school to change into that afternoon. PLEASE do not have students wear them to school, but wear clothing that they can wear underneath their costume. The parade route will be the same as our Fun Run, and families are welcome to come and watch from either side of the sidewalk. Some of our primary teachers may reach out asking for volunteers to help out. Remember, you are welcome, so don’t be a ghost!
We are still accepting applications for our library tech assistant, so if you might be interested or know of someone who would be interested you have one more week to apply. We are looking for someone that enjoys working with children, loves literature and has a facility for technology. Thank you for spreading the word.
Enjoy the longer weekend and take care,
Jim Mangan, Principal

Falcom Families:
October is National Bully Prevention Month and our students have been learning all about how to identify unkind behavior vs. bullying and have steps they can take when they either experience or see these unwanted behaviors. They are learning to be Upstanders by using these three steps: STOP (Tell the person to Stop), WALK (Walk away from the unwanted behavior) and TALK (to a trusted adult if the behavior doesn't stop).
UNITY DAY!
In recognition of National Bully Prevention Month we will be celebrating Unity day on October 19th at Forest Hills! Mark your calendars to WEAR and SHARE ORANGE on 10/19 to come together in one giant message uniting our community for kindness, acceptance and inclusion, and even the world, to visibly show that we believe no child should ever experience bullying.
*if your student does not have the color orange in their wardrobe and wants to participate, rest assured I will have pins for them to wear to show their support!

We need your help on the Yearbook Committee
The yearbook is an important way for the kids to remember classmates and school events and to reflect on how they've grown over the school year. But, we can't do it without volunteers. We need help with creative direction and organizing photos. Please register your interest in helping on the volunteer form: https://bit.ly/FHPTOVOLUNTEERS
Hello LOSD Families!
As we return to community gathering, we are seeing some cases of Lice and Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease. Please review the links below for more information on how to prevent, identify and treat either. Please see your medical professional for diagnosis, treatment and more information. Also, it is very important for you to bring your students medications to school if they
may be needed during school hours.

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is a learning disability in reading. People with dyslexia have trouble reading at a good pace and without mistakes. They may also have a hard time with reading comprehension, spelling, and writing. But these challenges aren’t a problem with intelligence.
Children and adults with dyslexia struggle to read fluently, spell words correctly, and memorize rote facts such as multiplication tables, among other challenges. But these difficulties have no connection to their overall intelligence. While people with dyslexia can be slow readers, they often, paradoxically, are very fast and creative thinkers with strong reasoning abilities.
Dyslexia can’t be “cured” – it is lifelong. But with appropriate instruction, an individual with dyslexia can learn to read, write, and spell and can become a highly successful individual.

Each week in October, we will feature a message about dyslexia in this newsletter. If you have questions or concerns regarding your child’s learning, please contact the school principal and/or literacy specialist. Another great parent resource would be to contact your school’s Student Services Parent Advisory Committee (SSPAC) representative. Please see here to learn how to contact your school representative.

New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
Bus Passes
If your child is riding a bus with a friend, or taking a different bus for a playdate etc, please have your child bring a note or call the office and request a bus pass.
Bus drivers will not let children on a bus without a pass.
Thank you!
Breakfast and Lunch Updates
School meals are no longer free. If you would like to purchase breakfast or lunch for your child you can put money into a SchoolCafe account for them. When they get their food from the line, your account will be charged. To enroll you need to know your child's school id number which can be found in ParentVUE (See below).
Be sure your child knows if you want them to have breakfast, since you will be charged $2.50 if they get breakfast at school (unless you qualify for free or reduced priced meals).
Teachers will ask students daily about their lunch choice to determine if they brought a lunch from home or they would like one of the following options:
- hot lunch - select one of two entrees
- yogurt lunch
- gluten-free lunch
- lactose-intolerant lunch
Each lunch option from the school is $4.00 per day (unless you qualify for free or reduced priced meals). Linked here is the menu for August/September.
Here are the instructions on loading your student's meal account and here is the information to apply for reduced prices.
