End-of-Year Message 2019
From Dr. Manno, Superintendent of Schools
Inspiring and Challenging Our Students
Dear BCSD Colleagues,
Please accept my congratulations and commendations on your hard work and relentless dedication to the BCSD vision of Inspiring and Challenging Our Students. As a District, we worked collaboratively to achieve the important objectives embedded in our SUCCESS Plan. A few highlights and important achievements include:
Promoting more inclusive programs and practices through professional development, program refinement, and parent engagement.
Increasing the use of practices which support Universal Design for Learning, including assistive technologies.
Continuing to support and expand a 1-1 technology initiative, with all students and faculty in grades 5-12 participating for 2019-20.
The successful implementation of a new elementary literacy program through intensive professional development and program support.
The evaluation of math and visual arts programs in preparation for curriculum revision/development, as well as continued program refinements and improvements in a number of curricular areas.
The evaluation of BCSD's RtI program and practices and the adoption and implementation of a universal screening tool to more effectively identify students in need of support.
The development and implementation of a number of new and exciting FLHS courses.
The development and implementation of a Dual Language Bilingual Education School of Choice at MKES.
Reflection on our practices that support student membership and voice, and social/emotional learning for students.
Developing a consistent understanding of the tenets of character education at the elementary level in preparation for program revision and development.
Developing consistent public curriculum documents in preparation for the launching of a public curriculum portal.
These accomplishments were a result of a broad scope of work and contributions by faculty and staff across the District. In addition, every day we observe countless small and large successes of faculty and staff who work directly with students in the classroom, in sporting areas, in academic competition, on the stage, or in any venue in which we engage students.
In May, we conducted our annual Strategic Planning Convocation which included administrators and faculty representing all schools and curricular areas. During this event, our progress on SUCCESS Plan objectives was evaluated and recommendations were made for areas of work for 2019-20. Consistent with our commitment to incremental and sustained improvement efforts, we will focus on the following program areas in 2019-20:
- Inclusive Instructional Practices
- STEM Programming
- Enrichment for All
- Elementary Literacy
- Social/Emotional Learning
- Character Education
Congratulations and thank you to everyone for your staunch commitment. I am proud to serve BCSD and your work. Please accept my wishes for a safe and enjoyable summer break.
Best Regards,
Dr. Christopher Manno
