How does $martville look like?
What is sustainability and Why is it important?
Renewable Energy The city is considered to be one of the few cities in the world that uses energy that is 100% renewable. The city is powered by solar, hydroelectric and wind energy. The resources of these energies are renewable resources which are sunlight, running water and wind. That is absolute opposite to the energy that other cities get from the fossil fuel, because it needs along time to be renewed. This helps to make the city more sustainable than many other cities around the world. | Electric Vehicles All of the cars in the city are hybrid electronic cars, which means they do not use gas, instead they use electricity. When buying a car from the city all the cars will be according to standards. When buying from outside the city the buyer will have to test the car and he/she cannot buy it unless it reaches the required standards. This is one of the ways to reach a high level of sustainability, because we are trying to reduce carbon emissions, so we do not heart the nature. | Waste Hierarch The Waste hierarchy or the three R's 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' is one of the ways that the city uses to help being sustainable. Reduce is to “use less stuff", Reuse is to “use stuff again” and Recycle is to “make old things into new stuff”. So basically the amount of craps that the city produces is not that much, because each house has to apply the three R’s on their craps, and then they can throw the rest crabs. The government is extremely severe dealing with the people who disobeys this rule, that is because this rule is so important to keep the city sustainable. |

How does the urban land use look like in the city and how does help being sustainable?
How does the urban land use look like in the city and how does help being sustainable?
The land use is defined as "the total of arrangements, activities, and inputs that people undertake in a certain land cover type. In the city there are six main types of the urban land use:
1-Residential Land Use:
Is the land where people live on, most of the people lives in single family homes or in semi-detached homes. It has approximately 30 – 35 homes per hectare. Every house is powered by renewable energy, basically solar and wind energy, and the houses apply the R’s on their craps as mentioned before, and that is why houses are help being sustainable.
2- Transportation Land Use:
Land that used by people to move from one place to another. It includes: Car-parking, Sidewalks, Roads, Highways, Railroad and all other lands that people use for transportation. In the city the people use electronic cars and as mentioned before they work on electricity instead of gas, trains and subways are powered by electric energy that comes from wind and hydroelectric, but planes are the only way of transportation that still has some planes that work on gas.
3- Institutional Land Use:
It is the land that serves a. educational, health, cultural, community’s social and recreational needs. Schools, collages, hospitals, mosques, churches and governmental buildings are all examples of institutional land use. In this type of land it is easy to be powered by wind and solar, especially because a lot of these buildings do not have full schedule and do not work all the day (schools, universities, etc…).
4- Open Space Land Use:
Is any open space or land that has no buildings and available for the public. This space includes: Green spaces, public seating areas, schoolyards and much more. This type of lands does not need a lot of services except for electricity to light them in night, which reaches from the lampposts that have solar cells that turn the sunlight to electricity, and it needs some garbage cans and people to collect them. This category of lands is the most sustainable between the six different lands.
5-Industrial Land Use:
It is land that people use for industrial purposes. In the city there are many examples on light industrial uses (e.g., processing plants) , because this type of industry is usually placed close to urban areas, unlike the heavy industrial that requires large spaces of land and has more sound and air pollution, and the latter type does not exist in the city to help keeping it sustainable. To help holding on to the sustainability in the city the small factories use only renewable energy (Solar and hydroelectric energy) by charging a big batteries that turn the solar and hydroelectric energy to electricity , and they use air filters to remove solid particulates such as dust, pollen, mould and bacteria from the air.
6-Commercial Land Use:
Commercial land use is land that is kept aside by the government for commercial activities, such as theaters, shops, restaurants, cafes and so on. One of the new rules in the city is to keep the commercial lands sustainable, in the present and the future, and that what improves the biggest idea of sustainability in this city, so by using solar and wind energy these commercial lands use can have electricity to run the places. These places will have to apply the three R’s on the craps they produce.
