Benninghoven Family Newsletter
Monthly Newsletter (October)
Mission: A place where everyone pursues their greatness.
Vision: A community coming together for our kids.
We are moving right along and into October already! Benninghoven has had some outstanding community events and we are all starting to feel a bit more "normal." Thank you to our PTA for hosting an incredible Family Fun Night and Grandparents Breakfast this week. It was great to see so many families come together and enjoy being in our building walls.
In a few weeks Quarter 1 wraps up. Students are off of school on Friday, October 14th as teachers have a work day to finalize the quarter and get ready for Conferences. Conferences will be hosted Thursday evening, 10/20 and Friday all day, 10/21. Your child's teacher is sending more information and an opportunity to sign up today! We hope to see EVERYONE for this chance to connect and share updates current progress and learning.
The last thing I want to share is an update and shift to our dismissal times. At the beginning of the year, as we are learning routines and practice the procedure, we dismiss a few minutes earlier. Our littlest Knights typically ahead of the bell, followed by other grades next. We have now shifted to be in line with instructional minutes guidelines in that dismissal does not begin until 3:10. Our Pre-K friends will continue a few minutes early, followed by the rest of the grades starting at 3:10. Thanks for your understanding and continued patience at this time of the day as we work to get 450 students out of the building quickly, and safely.
Have a wonderful fall weekend! Enjoy your family and thanks for being a part of our school community.

NEW THIS YEAR - BIRTHDAY BOOKS (REPEAT)
We are excited to bring the birthday book tradition back to Benninghoven. This is another way that we can partner with you to celebrate your child and all they bring to our school. In honor of their birthday a book will be donated to their classroom library. During the week of your child's birthday (or half birthday for our summer birthdays) the book will be read aloud to the class in celebration! Longer titles may need to be a preview of the book if time does not allow for the book to be read in its entirety.
How it works: You may either send in a book from home or purchase one from the BH Amazon Wish List. Books could be a favorite title of your child, a book from the BH Birthday Book Suggestions Amazon Wish list, or a requested book from your classroom teacher. There will be special book plaques in the office or library that will be affixed to the book and include your child’s name. If you would like the book to be a surprise then you can drop it off in the office or have it shipped directly to the school from the Wishlist. Be sure to put your child’s name and teacher in the memo so we can make sure it is given to the correct classroom.
A good resource to check for age appropriate books is Common Sense Media. You are also welcome to email Mrs. Readman in the library if you have a question about a particular book being a good fit for a specific age group.
If you need support or are not able to purchase a book, just let your child’s teacher know. We will have a collection of books that students will be able to select from, so ALL students have the opportunity to participate.
Donate to the Book Bank: If you would like to donate to the Book Bank for our school you can do so by writing a check to Benninghoven and turning it in to the front office. Or, you can purchase books and drop them off as well. Your efforts to make this a success are appreciated as we celebrate our students and increase the love of literature!
News from your PTA
PTA Fun Fact
The PTA pays for ALL school field trips (transportation and admission) for ALL students. We want every child to enjoy the educational and fun experience that field trips provide. Your PTA membership helps support this opportunity. Become a member for $10 today.
Head Room Parent Opportunity
There are still a few spots open for head room parents. A head room parent communicates with the teacher prior to class parties and then coordinates with parents to donate necessary items and sign up to lead activities for the party. It's great if you can attend and help facilitate but not required. Current openings include - Hoog, Widman and Kite.
Reflections Art Contest
PTA Reflections is a nationally acclaimed student recognition program to encourage artistic creativity in the classroom and at home. Students of all grades and abilities may participate and explore the arts based on the current year's theme. The theme for 2022-2023 is "Show Your Voice!"
Entries may be submitted in the following categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts. Need some ideas? Check out last year’s district gallery here. Deadline is October 19! Visit the Benninghoven PTA page for more information and an entry sheet!
Benninghoven Support Ronald McDonald House
Did you know that Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC) collects the tabs from your pop cans to recycle? RMHC gets paid in cash for these pop tabs which then provides housing and other services for families with extended stays at Children's Mercy Hospital! In 2019, RMHC recycled more than 16 tons of pop tabs and raised more than $14,000 to help families going through trying times. Help Benninghoven Elementary raise money for RMHC and start collecting those pop tabs! Save your pop tabs in zip lock bags and have your child drop them off at the RMHC donation bin outside of the Benninghoven MPR.
Benninghoven Family Directory
The PTA hopes you are enjoying your grade level directory. Please use this to connect with other families, send birthday invites and build a stronger Benninghoven community. Please contact your child's teacher to get a link to your grade level directory. If there are any changes that need or you would like your child's information added, please reach out to the PTA at email@example.com.
