Proud to Be Your Principal
This is my favorite time of year. I hope everyone gets out this weekend to enjoy the beautiful fall colors and how amazing our Minocqua/ Hazelhurst/ Lake Tomahawk area is.
We are all one big team here at Minocqua J1 Schools, and it takes us all to help our children reach their fullest potential. I want to stress something that is vitally important to your child's learning - I know that we are all part of super-busy families, but structuring 20 minutes of reading time with your child every day day is the single most important thing that you, as a parent, can do.
Please take a moment and read the passage from "Why Read 20 Minutes A Day."
Our brains develop as we “feed” them with experiences. The experience of reading (whether you’re the reader or the one being read to) activates and “exercises” many of the areas of the brain. The visual cortex works as your eyes track the words on the page and look at the illustrations. Your memory makes connections between what you already know about the topic of the story and its content. You integrate new information learned through reading further strengthening and growing your network of knowledge. Reading provides one of the most enriching and complex brain activities available in life.

Children who are read to at home have a higher success rate in school.
Science Proves Reading To Kids Really Does Change Their Brains
Researchers have hard evidence that doing so (Reading to and with your children) activates the parts of preschoolers’ brains that help with mental imagery and understanding narrative - both of which are key for the development of language and literacy.
This is a good season to snuggle up with a book and share some fun time reading with your child - have a great weekend!
Proud to be your principal,
Brent Johnson
SAVE THE DATE: Parent-Teacher Conferences
Additionally, we have had some parent requests for informational sessions on some great things going on in the building. Please see below for times and information about the different sessions we are offering. Hope to see you there!
Notes from the Nurse
Hello Parents!
School is in full swing, and with that comes kids getting sick. We have had a number of students and staff with cold symptoms. Lots of coughing, sniffling, and sore throats. Remember to please keep your child home from school if they have a temperature of 100.4 or greater. In addition, they should be fever-free without any pain relievers for 24 hours.
Also, with the start of school comes the possibility of head lice. Here at MHLT we follow the following policy: if your child is found to have live lice, they will be sent home to be treated. They will be allowed to come back to school after treatment, when I will check them for any further active lice. If they are found to still have active lice they will be sent home. If they only have nits, the student can stay in school; however, it is extremely important to continue to comb your child’s hair daily to eliminate any remaining nits in the hair.
Click here to read more about how you can prevent and treat head lice.
Finally, we still have a number of students who are not up to date with their immunizations (see table below). Please check with your physician, or look on the Wisconsin immunization registry to find out if you child needs any immunizations.
Click here to access the Wisconsin Immunization Registry.
If you are not going to have your child immunized you must fill out an immunization waiver form, which is available for download here.
If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Pam Holtz at pholtz@mhlt.org or (715) 356-5206 x2204.
"Parents As Teachers"
Here at MJ1, we have a commitment to helping our community develop the children attending our school district into growing active citizens. Our school staff recognizes that to accomplish this we must educate young scholars to problem solve and take responsibility, just as parents and families do at home. We strive to promote the home school connection to aide in the growth of the whole child. The article linked below explains how the struggle with teaching our children life skills is well worth the effort and provides us with food for thought.
