FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents
Next Wednesday classes will be staying in their own year levels to celebrate Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. Ash Wednesday involves applying ashes, made from blessed palm branches from the previous year's Palm Sunday Mass, to a person’s forehead. The ashes applied to the forehead symbolise the dust from which God made us. The priest speaks the words: "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" or "Repent and believe in the Gospel."
The Lenten season is a good opportunity for us all to spend time in prayer, to give to others in need and to ‘fast’ or ‘give up’ something as a commitment to becoming a better person.
We will focus on Lent in our classrooms by encouraging the children to do things for others and praying for them, especially those less fortunate. Each family will be provided a project Compassion box. As we cannot gather as a whole school at the moment, we are going to participate as class groups to the creation of a whole school paper mural. Children from each year level draw/ paint/ colour a butterfly; discussion about the butterfly as a symbol for change/ conversion/ new life; write Lenten intentions on back of the butterflies; each class brings butterflies to the prayer room to attach to the back drop and form part of a whole school mural.
Sacraments
Sacraments are ceremonies that point to what is sacred, significant and important for Catholics. The Sacramental Programme at Our Lady of the Mission Parish has commenced with enrolment masses taking place this weekend. The school will continue to work very closely with the Parish Team to ensure that our children and families are fully prepared. In our parish the sacramental programme is Parent focused, Parish based and a School supported Sacramental programme.
Bishops Mandate
Catholic schools in Western Australia have a distinctive ethos and are mandated by the Bishops of Western Australia. Each member of the Catholic school community strives to give Christian witness through words, attitudes and actions. The Bishops Code of Ethical Conduct clearly states that all those in Catholic Schools in WA must uphold the following - Gospel values, dignity, giftedness, relationships, confidentiality and accountability. The Padbury community works together as a professional team, collaboratively, respectfully, openly, honestly and energetically, upholding the vision of the school as well as the expectations of the Bishops Mandate.
Playground
Playground update – the junior playground is currently having further upgrades competed and during the holidays the K/PP fort will be built. Keep an eye out on the school Instagram for updates!
COVID
Padbury CPS currently liaises closely with Catholic Education Western Australia regarding COVID. All information received comes via the government and Health WA.
We have procedures and protocols in place should there be a positive case associated with our school and we will be ready to communicate these with the school community as required. Please ensure that your emails and mobile phone numbers are up to date at the office.
Health WA confirms who is a positive case and they interview the person with COVID. Close contacts are determined from then on.
Should the school find itself with a positive case, I ask parents not to go on to social media but rather communicate directly with the school if they or their child tests positive as it is important for the school to send official communication to the school community.
The staff have also been working extremely hard to ensure continuity of learning should a year level need to isolate for 7 days.
COVID - Mask Wearing
Under current WA Government requirements, students in primary schools are not required to wear masks while at school in areas where mask mandates currently apply. The Minister for Education, however, has stated that as case numbers increase there will be a requirement for students from Year 3 onwards to wear masks at school.
The change in the definition of close contacts in school settings has reinforced the importance of mask-wearing. Primary students are being significantly impacted by positive COVID-19 cases as entire classes are being identified as close contacts, under the following definitions:
· Face-to-face contact for 15 minutes or longer with an infectious person where a mask was not worn;
· Interaction for more than two hours in a classroom environment where masks have not been worn or have been removed.
Close contacts are required to isolate for seven days and this has huge implications for the entire family.
CEWA has provided the following information -
Close contacts in secondary schools will be very limited due to mask wearing by students and staff. In primary schools, there is far more likelihood of close contacts being identified due to mask wearing presently not being mandated for the children. Of course, if the children are correctly wearing masks in primary while in the presence of a COVID positive person, they will not be considered as a close contact.
I would encourage parents of children in Years 3 and above to discuss with your child the possibility of wearing masks at school and the potential for this to become compulsory in the days/weeks ahead.
It may be prudent for parents to try some mask wearing at home to allow children in Years 3 and above to become familiar with the correct wearing, removal and hygiene relating to masks.
Some of our children are already choosing to wear a mask at school. If you wish your child to do so, they are more than welcome to wear a mask at school at anytime before government mandates.
If you are purchasing masks for your child, especially for younger children, please ensure that they are child sized and fit appropriately.

PCPS Website
Please take the time to read through the school website as it offers a lot of information about our school including the history, traditions, routines and practices here at Padbury Catholic Primary School. Upon enrolment at Padbury Catholic Primary School all parents sign the enrolment form whereby it stipulates that parents will agree to abide by the polices and directions of the school and Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). The school website is a handy reference for the year ahead and any updated information will be provided via the newsletter or email informing you of any alterations to procedures and policies.
Protective Behaviours
The Protective Behaviours Programme taught at Padbury CPS is the Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC). It is a child safety program for children and young people from age 3 to year 12. It teaches children to:
· recognise abuse and tell a trusted adult about it
· understand what is appropriate and inappropriate touching
· understand ways of keeping themselves safe.
All children and young people have a right to:
· be treated with respect and to be protected from harm
· be asked for their opinions about things that affect their lives and to be listened to
· feel and be safe in their interactions with adults and other children and young people
· understand as early as possible what is meant by 'feeling and being safe'.
The curriculum follows 2 main themes:
· we all have the right to be safe
· we can help ourselves to be safe by talking to people we trust.
The two themes are explored through 4 focus areas:
· the right to be safe
· relationships
· recognising and reporting abuse
· protective strategies.
The focus areas are targeted to the age of the learners. KS:CPC is mandated by the Government and is taught every year by the class teachers. The teachers will send home letters regarding when they are commencing their units this year and what will be taught.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Sacraments
Your child (Year 3, 4 & 6) should have brought home a 'Sacramental Enrolment Pack' last week, which contains all the information required to begin the journey of the Sacraments in the OLM Parish. Any questions please contact your classroom teacher or the Parish Sacramental Coordinator.
A reminder that the Sacramental Enrolment Masses are on at all Masses this weekend at OLM. Please refer to your enrolment pack for more details.
Project Compassion
This week all students will have brought home Project Compassion boxes. Students and families are encouraged to donate to Project Compassion over the period of Lent. The money raised goes to such worthy causes around the world through Caritas.
Spanning across the six weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australian schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world.
Administration
Student Image Use
At the start of 2019, all families completed the School Publication of Student Images form which grants or denies permission for your child's image to be used. As noted in this document when you signed, this remains for the duration of each child's time at PCPS. If you would like to change this permission at any time you are able to do so by contacting the front office in writing. New students to Padbury will receive (or may have already received) a form to be filled in.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN Online will take place in Week 3 of Term 2, 2022 for our Year 3 and 5 students. These students will be bringing home a flyer this week with details for these parents. More information will follow closer to the testing dates.
Kiss & Ride
A reminder for old families and information for new PCPS families about the car bays along O'Leary Road.
Mornings - Parents may park along these bays.
Afternoons - NO PARKING. These bays are for KISS & RIDE ONLY.
Parking Reminder
As we commence 2022, it is timely to remind all caregivers of parking procedures. The City of Joondalup will be regularly sending rangers to patrol school areas and issue infringements, so please ensure you park correctly during drop-off and pick-up times at PCPS to avoid receiving any infringements. Please see the flyer below from the City of Joondalup, as well as the PCPS Kiss & Ride/Parking Procedures. Thank you for your cooperation to ensure the safe and efficient arrival and departure procedures at Padbury.
Thought for the Week
Have a wonderful fortnight ahead!

PCPS NEWS
Snakes at PCPS
In the last two weeks we have had some small snakes sighted on our PCPS grounds. With the recent heat, as well as our proximity to Hepburn Heights Bushland, some snake sightings are expected. Each time we have seen a snake, a snake catcher has been called and the snake has been removed from school grounds successfully.
The school has procedures in place to minimise the risk of snake bites and continues to update these procedures based on the latest advice. Teachers have spoken with their classes about what to do if they see a snake.
This is a good time to remind parents to be aware that it is snake season and that they could be around the school. Please view the Snake Guidelines on our website (https://www.padcath.wa.edu.au/formsandprocedures) and speak with your children about snake bite prevention behaviours, as teachers have been doing in classes.
ART NEWS
Visual Art
Even though this semester we focus on Drama in The Studio, the Year 5’s were lucky enough to use their Visual Art skills to create artworks for the upcoming City of Joondalup Festival. The students recalled their watercolour skills and following Georgia O’Keefe style of artwork to create artwork inspired by their local neighbourhood – school.
The artworks will be scanned by local artist Sean Adamas and printed onto heart shaped sculptures. The sculptures will be placed at Hillary’s Boat Harbour from 11th March until the 2nd April as a part of the festival. We hope you are able to go along and spot Padbury Catholic masterpieces.
